I was wondering which sounds better. The head with a cabinet, or a combo. Also for pure vox-like tone would it be better to have two blues, or an alnico gold? Would the blues break up earlier? I am getting seriously close to getting a stangray after playing one here in Minnesota. It's one of the best amps I have ever heard!

Never played the combo, so I can't comment on that part of your question. But I have the Head/Cab with Alnico Blues, and I've been gigging with the Stingray plugged in to a single Gold in a THD 2x12 (the other Gold is connected to my RXES). The Golds aren't exactly like the Blues, but they are really close. They have more authority on the bottom end, the mids and upper mids are about the same, and not quite as much top end sizzle. I love both the Blues and the Golds to be perfectly honest.

I have never used the head/cab. I'm playing a combo with the gold speaker and am very satisfied with the sound...that's a gross understatement. Personally I like the ease of setting up with a combo. Plus many of the places I play are very space challenged and the foot print of a 2x12 is just not practical. Either way you go you will be more than happy.

A separate head and cab should yield more options, and also easy to lug around.

My last combo was a Classic 30.
With any luck my LAST combo will have been one as well..

The ef-86 is more prone to microphonics than the 12ax7, and this will be less of a problem with a head.

Of course within its rating. The thing i love is the way it reacts to the RX. The greenies really suit it in my op. I have a Z 1x12 w/ gold coming for it and also a 2x12 avatar w/ greens. Im curious if the gold reacts like a lesser wattage speaker at lower volume or if it needs to be driven to breakup. Cos i really like what i hear with a single greenie. Up to that point anyways. If i could get maybe a 40 watt greenback, that would be heaps cool. CheerZ mate Azat

Personally if you're gonna be in the garage and do occasional bar gigs the Maz Jr. will not only save you dough, but it keep you happy in tone heaven. I don't think the honeymoon ever ends with any of the Dr. Z amps. I think they are both great amps, but a MAz Combo sounds like it will great for you. While you can plug any electric into it, it does sound great with Fender sing coil axes! The StangRay is a very powerful amp and has awesome tone too, but a Maz JR. you can pick up your combo and go and it will have plenty of headroom and be plenty loud too.

They have a ton of authority on the bottom, but they get that Alnico crunchy top thing going on too. I think they are one of the best sounding speakers I've ever owned, at any volume. But not everyone feels this way.

" do i go all out stang ray and z brake or grab maz junior ??"
different sounds, you should try and play them both.
