I have a 73 Fender DR which has been totally black faced with BF cosmetics, a Weber 12F150, and all sozo caps. The DR fits 95% of the venue's I play. I have been intrigued with DR Z's stuff for all while. I guess its time for a change. I play all kinds of music. I have a 74 and 76 strat with Bill Lawrence L-280/290pups, a 52 RI tele with Lawrence Pups, 2 LP's with Fralins, A LP Studio with P-100's, two Rics, and a 68 ES345. My effects include Fulltone Wah, FDII, OCD, Fat Boost; Barber Tone Press; Fulltone Supatrem, Choral Flange, H&K Replex and Rotoshpere. The pedal board has Bill Lawrence cable as well as to/from the guitar. I am thinking about the MAZ Jr with a single 12. Any suggestions are greatly welcomed. Incidentally, the sozo's are amazing caps..work very in guitars too. Thanks!

I suggest you beat a hasty path to your nearest Z dealer and play a Jr 1x12. Also check out the 2x10. Good luck.

You might want to try a Z28 also. A friend of mine who's been gigging steadily in Richmond for 30 years just retired both his BF Deluxe and BF Bassman head for a Z28 2x10 combo. He had heard my Maz Jr one night and that encounter prompted him to abandon the Fenders and move into "Z land"...and he is quite happy with the result.
We AB'd his two blackfaces with my Maz Jr and Maz Sr and there was no contest. In the end however, we both ended up with 6V6 Z28's (his 2x10 my 1x12)which closely mimic the Deluxe, but more in the brown tolex version. WAY more bottom than any Deluxe. The first time you dime a Maz or 28 and really dig in on the E & A string at the nut you'll be surprised at how tight things stay.

I gave him a 12AX7 that was matched on the two sides to use in place of the 5751 as the phase inverter for a more agressive tone. He loved it and says he now has two different amps with a ten second single tube change. I also gave him a 12AY7 to sort of "jazzify" the amp when he needs those clean sorts of tones.

While on tour with Gretchen Wilson this past year, I was using a '66 Deluxe Reverb and a MAZ 18 Jr with 2 10's. The amps complimented each other well, and are pretty similar in terms of size and output. I kept both amps for a while, but started to find that every time I had an important recording session (or any club gig or rehearsal for that matter), I was constantly taking the MAZ Jr. My Deluxe was TIP-TOP in terms of performance. Complete servicing by one of the top techs in Nashville, good tubes, a Weber speaker (had a 12F150 for a while, then a California.) Didn't matter, because in it's STOCK form the MAZ Jr. just plain KICKED IT'S arse. The Jr. could do everything the Deluxe could do, but MUCH more. Could get all the pretty clean tones, but it's also so much more agressive for edgier stuff. So I ended up selling the Deluxe and haven't regretted it one bit. If you have a Deluxe Reverb and are thinking of making a switch, you'll get no argument from me.... In the same ballpark as a Deluxe, the Z-28 will give you a little more HUFF and the MAZ Jr will give you a little more ZING, if that makes sense.

Yeah....try the Maz Jr. with 2 12's. I play mainly soul, blues and R&B. I visited with Mike Zaite and told him that sometimes I wanted a little more bottom than the 2 X10s, and he helped me configure it in the Maz. Sr. cab. It's very sweet---thick as hell and you can overdrive the hell out of it without blowing out windows. You will love this amp.

i have a 65 deluxe....all original...and a maz 18nr 2-10....i love the deluxe for what it does but in all honesty if i had to let one go it would be the deluxe...the Z just cooks....it'll may also send some of your pedals into early retirement...not that it don't do pedals....it just sounds so good by itself and has enough versatility all on its own that i find myself using pedals more sparingly than before...it doesn't do an overly convincing DR tone so i personally would not replace the deluxe with the maz....between the two amps and all the guitars and pedals you have theres not much ground that can't be covered....i sure like 2-10's....they're are for a fact the biggest sounding 2-10's i've ever heard.....not as compressed sounding as a vibrolux and plenty of bottom with that nice fat crunch on top....

I have a JR and SR with 1x12 Celestion G12H and the SR easily gets louder than my Allen Old Flame w/2-Weber 12F150's. I think the G12H is much more efficient, therefore louder. I also use 12AT7 in the Phase inverter stage of the JR and it sounds very Fendery, but like others have said, the MAZ's are more solid on the lows. I also like Ei Elites in the first two tube positions to really "Fender" things up (only better)

Thanks to all of you! I trully appreciate your input. So, it seems that a MAZ JR with 2-10's is the way to go..

I've had a Deluxe Reverb Reissue and now have a Maz Jr 2x12. No contest at all. Even after $200 in NOS tubes, a weber speaker and an Earcandy 1x12 extension cabinet, the Maz still smokes the clean sound of the fender. AND, it takes pedals better. IMHO.

+1 more on this. I have a nice 66 DR and I use my Maz 18 JR 1-12 G12H way more. The low end is far better and I use a Tim for overdrive. Great amp!

At one point I had two black face and one silverface Deluxe Reverbs. Then I bought a nice black face Vibrolux Reverb at a pawn shop for $140! The Vibrolux was so much better that I sold/traded off the Deluxe reverbs. Unfortunately that was right before they shot up in value. To me the DRs were always too sharp on the high end and thin in the bass. Honestly any DR Z amp will kill any DR. I'm keeping the Vibrolux though. They are unique.
