Hi all...got my Stangray a few days ago and I am still getting used to it, but man it's FAT and chimey! Can be twangy too if you like...so versatile...with the tone and cut control...wow. Dare I say it..but I can hear some D*mble-esque sounds coming from this little gem at lower volumes. It's very very CLEAN - you guys were right. The cut knob is a dang nice feature. I hear fender in this amp as well as Vox...anyone else? I am running it into a Bogner OS cab with one V30/G12H30 combo at 8 ohms. I keep hearing that the 'Ray is best with alnicos...is there that big of a sound diff? Anyone tried both Ceramic and Alnicos with the 'Ray? To me, the high end is just a twinge harsh with my current cab. Somebody sell me a Z 2x12!! I love the way the tone control fattens up the sound and the bottom just blossoms as you turn it clockwise. Very different than any tone I've experienced. Is the Ghia's Tone knob react this way as well? Takes pedals like a champ...running both a Tube Zone and a Crunch Box(not at same time!)...with a Barber LTD Silver on all the time. Man...to me you just can't go wrong with a Z. If it wasn't for Z's I'd still be going through channel switcher after channel switcher trying to find a sound. The hardest part is deciding which of these gems to buy...I want 'em all!! hehe Kind regards, Brandon

The hardest part is deciding which of these gems to buy...I want 'em all!! hehe Kind regards, Brandon When I got my used Stingray head from Curt, I didn't have any specific speakers in mind. But I could tell from the clips I was hearing that I wasn't getting everything I expected from the top end. So I plunked down my money and bought a Z 2x12 with Alnico Blues. Oh man.... you really should NOT hear one of those cabs if you can't afford it. It will make you crazy! That cab sounds SO amazing with the Stingray. That was before we had the Alnico Golds as an option. After the great experience with the Blues, and based on several others positive comments, I went ahead and bought a set of Golds and put them in one of my THD 2x12 cabs. Once again, they are astonishingly great in the top end. Both speakers do something with the upper midrange and top end that I don't hear in any of the other speakers I've tried, but as with everyone else, the number of speakers I've tried is limited. I definitely can say without any trouble at all that I've found the speakers of choice for me. The cool thing is you can run the Stingray into a single Gold and be done with it. Nice! If you're curious what mine sounds like, I just put up a clip comparing the Stingray and RXES over in the sounds forum. Check that for how mine sounds...

Is the Ghia's Tone knob react this way as well? Yes, the Ghia tone works exactly the same, but w/o a cut control. I can vouch for the enormous sound of the Ray/ single Cele Gold. I took it out of the cabinet for a few days because it was loud LOUD, but missed it enough to put it right back in. It or two Blues are THE speakers for the Ray or RxES IMHO. I used a single Celestion blue with a Ghia and Z 28 too, and don't forget the Weber blues...they're real nice too, just not as loud/ efficient.

Haven't heard the Gold, but I'll take Bill's word on it. The Weber Alnico Blue Dog 30 watt, is a great speaker. Not as loud as the Celestion Blue, but a little thicker, and more robust to me, and still does the chime thing well. Congrats on the "Ray"! Harold

I second C-Gold with Ray. Definitely, 2x12 C-Blues and Ray is my fave.

My Stangray is my new favorite. it is just an amazing amp. I initially didn't like the amp with 2 Blues. Just a little to bright for me. I prefer the V30/G12H30 combo. When the amp is cranked however it seems to darken and fatten up with the blues. I used to think this was a loud amp. But lately i have been diming it and I guess I'm just getting used to the volume. My friend has a DC30 he brought over last night. (LOUD) It's a great amp but it can be harsh at high volumes. The Stang is always pleasant and it is so tight at high volumes. Not like the Matcless or my Vox AC30. Benttop I definitley hear the fender thing . Especially with a neck strat. and up all the way.

She's definitely a winner. I am loving the tones, especially when I use my hotplate on one click down. It is tricky getting the cut knob to work with your cab/speakers, but I' think I've got it. That Cut knob is the Ray's secret weapon.

The Cut control on the Stang is to me what makes it so versatile. With the cut down, you can put every Roland JC120 back in the closet. With it up a little, you can twang your way to tonal heaven.
With it cranked up higher, you get pretend it's a newer Matchless with lotsa bite.
Try a clean boost set really loud with the Cut up high (2-4 o clock) and listen to how the bluesy bite sets in-- it's pure magic!

Hey Brandon,
I'm glad yer enjoying that Stang Ray head! I was always fascinated by it's cleans. I wish I could have kept her around a while longer, but I'm a creature of habit and really love the sound of a cranked Deluxe Reverb (like i told ya I've been playing the same '64 DR since I bought it used in '66 for $100). Old habits die hard, but I was FINALLY able to retire the old DR when I got 20 and 30 watt Fargen Blackbirds.
Try lots of pedals...not all play well with the Ray. Anything that is looking for an amp-on-the-verge of breakup will fall a bit short (TIM/Timmy or the KOT). Instead, try heavier gain OD's like the Eternity or BB Preamp. I tried a lot of boosters, but one really stood out due to it's complexity (in-yer-face, yet delicate...hard to imagine)...the Z Vex SHO. Simply stunning with the Ray.
Brandon...enjoy!
