Talk about quick service...I FINALLY broke down and ordered one Monday from Avatar, and it showed up yesterday. Funny, DHL put it in my wife's truck, in the front seat, and I never saw it until today! After spending about an hour with it, I'm absolutely convinced it is the best speaker I've owned. Without going into all the standard cliche's, I'll simply say it responds quick as lightning (like a ceramic), but has the sweetness of alnico. Not as compressed as my 50w Weber, or a Celestion Blue. My biggest challenge is getting a thick & smooth snappy low end, but still retaining enough chime to make the Tele B string (I use a bender) stand out. This speaker does it well, actually it does it amazingly well! Shelling out the bucks for this was not easy, but no doubt it's gonna pay off in no time.

Glad to hear you like it. I was debating between ordering my Stang Ray with the Gold or the 2x12 with Blues. I eventually decided on the Blues, but maybe some day down the road a Gold may be in my future. Try to post some clips when you get time.

Just got back from an FDP jam and got to "really" try the Gold out...what a killer speaker! I especially like the mid tone character of it...different than anything else I've heard. I also got to step back and listen to another player using it, that was cool. Some have talked about the slight "grittyness" of the BB pre, and this speaker smooths it out some, makes it sound like almost like another pedal down there.

dock, I think you'll dig this speaker in any of your numerous Z's. It really is THAT nice.

Which Avatar 1x12 cab did you buy? the regular cab or the vintage marshally looking one? I can't tell by the back picture.
Also do you get any cone cry with the Gold?
Thanks

Thanks It's actually a Dr Z 19 x 19 old style cabinet. Here's a pic of the front. Notice the many plys in the plywood on the back...that's top quality & durable wood Z uses. I have coaxed a little bit of cone cry from the speaker up above the 12th fret...nothing as bad as a Vintage 30 though.

Doesn't the cone cry bother you?

Doesn't the cone cry bother you? No because it's not THAT bad, plus I tend to do most of my playing below the 12th fret. I've only noticed the cry maybe twice in about 10 hours of playing time.
