So my love/hate relationship with my Stangray culminated and led me to post it for sale or trade on a local music trading page on facebook. Low and behold I got a good offer to trade for a super mint Dr Z Monza Head and matching 2x12 open back cabinet.
The amp is as close to brand new condition as possible. So far I'm loving it. The mids in this amp are very prominent which is the exact opposite of the stangray and why I didn't dig it. And for 20 watts this thing is incredibly loud!

Monza madness!!! Great amp, brother! Glad you found what you need! There's a lot of recent interest in the Monza, and a lot of discussions of various settings which work well. Enjoy that bad boy!!!

Wow, that seems like quite the change in sound scape. Cool...what speakers in the cab? The Monza has been a really enjoyable amp for me, and has provided a sound that feels familiar and yet operates in a unique fashion, all the while being stubbornly set on her own ways. I hope you continue the enjoyment.

I've never played a Stang Ray but I sure love my Monza. My wife bought me a Headbone amp head switcher, so I'm going to use the Monza for leads and switch to my Z-Lux or Therapy for rhythm work... Man, the Monza is a whole lot of amp for under 20 watts. It's amazing. I don't think mine has ever broken a sweat yet!

The cab has the standard V30 and G12H in it. I'm seriously impressed with how loud 20 watts is. The volume and those thick mids are sweet. Can't wait to gig it.

I must say the sustain on this thing is incredible. Even with relatively clean tone it seems to ring out.

Do you guys notice more hum from the monza than other amps? Mine seems to have a good bit of 60 cycle hum and some low level swirling sounds. Tried rolling preamp tubes didn't change anything.

It's all the gain the amp has. If you're familiar with Stangray type amps, I could see how that noise level could be bothersome. I had a couple Boogies before my Dr Z conversion and I thought the Monza was actually very quiet all things considered!

Did you roll the JJ's it came with??? I'm in the process of picking out some new tubes for V1, but I found some Mesa SPAX7's from my old Mark amp. Tossed them in V1 and they were super quiet. Sounded better to my ears than the JJ, too, but still not quite what I'm looking for...

It currently has a jj in V1 and a Russian Mullard in v2 I tried two good JJ's out of my twin and it seemed the same. It's got an audible hum with the volume completely off.

I play mine pretty loud and therefore expect some hum. Like Frank said, it's got a lot do do with the gain the Monza has. But then again, that's where the magic lies.

Maybe a little video with the 'hum' would help to make sure we are all thinking the same way about what your noise sounds like.

Well I just tried mine this morning and found that the hum is connected to drive and the shhhhhh noise is connected to the volume. The tone adjust the tenor of each noise.

I can definitely say the SPAX7 in V1 cut noise to whisper levels. My cookie tray of 12AX7's should be coming tomorrow, so I'm going to play around with some Mullards, Tung-Sols, Gold Lions and EHX's and see where that leads me.

Congrats on your new (to you) MONZA! Do you plug the amp right into the wall? When I first got my Monza and was gigging steady the level of noise varied in my house (at different times of day)and from venue to venue. I got an isobar ultra power strip to clean up/filter the power and most of the noise went away. Appliances in your home, dimmers and electrical equipment in other places in your area can add noise to the power coming out of the wall. The isolated outlets also help eliminate ground loops when running multiple amps in concert. www.tripplite.com/isobar-4-outlet-surge-protector-6-ft.-cord-3300-joules-diagnostic-leds~ISOBAR4ULTRA/There are more advanced and expensive power filtering devices but they may not be necessary... Good Luck!

Must be something external that was causing the noise. It's been really quiet today. God I love the tone of this. Tubescreamer in front and let her sing.

Yeah, it's amazing what a little boost does to the Monza. I said in another post somewhere that I figured the Monza had enough gain without a boost. Was I wrong when I took Lee's advice and put my Klone in front of it. Wow, that combo with a 335 is lethal. Lots of fun to try and keep that beast on a leash!
