I hear people raving about the 6p14ps over the EL84, especially the current JJ EL84. Where are you buying these? Is this the same tube that The Tube Store is selling as a Preferred Series 7189? I have a bunch of old JJ EL84s that I bought about 12 to 14 years ago that I like a lot and will probably last me the rest of my life but I'm always interested in an improvement. Isn't Doc using these in the Z Wreck?

Same tube... Russian made, Russian name. There are several levels of durability. Have a look on eBay. A bit of a crap shoot, but if you buy 12 and four are good, you're money ahead and they'll likely way outlast new production tubes... And sound better.

Smolder is right...I got some from doc and they were killer...ordered some of them from Siberian shop...not so hot. Got to agree the latest jj 84's are a crap shoot too...ive had two quad set's that are a little noisy...not at idle but certain notes will do things we all cant stand...buzz...buy those 6p14ps (reflector) thing at your own risk

I know a little shop on this side of the globe that bought a huge box ages ago and has been selling them for cheap ever since. Great tube but: It reduces output, clean headroom and attack. So if you like your amps edgy, clean, powerful and precise, they're probably a small step in the wrong direction. If you like them saturating earlier, a bit more quiet and a little less harsh, they're for you.
For now, I've gone back to current production EH EL84s but I keep the 6p14ps near by (always have a mic pouch with replacement tubes taped into the back of my combo).

I bought a pair of the 7189's from The Tube Store and I don't like the reduced headroom. I'm going back to my JJ's. Like I said these are not current production tubes and don't seem to have the problem with rattling and other things.
