Hi all!
First post on the forum, and I'm super excited to be a part of the Z-fam. I'm a professional freelance guitarist based out of Seattle, and was looking to downsize/upgrade my primary stage rig. I ended up finding an incredible deal on an older (2005) Maz-18 Reverb head and I jumped on it! I currently run it through my Avatar 1x12 with a Celestion Gold.
When I first got the amp, my initial reaction was...boy, this is a bright amp. Incredibly touch responsive and beautiful sounding but WAAAY bright, even with humbuckers. I figured it was the gold, and so I'd been toying with the thought of trading it out for a Greenback...that is, until I played it with a band.
PERFECT. Wow, beautiful tones that sit just right in a mix. And so, so versatile. This is the perfect rig for me; beautiful cleans that I can pedal-platform off of, great sounding natural breakup (thank you master volume!) for harder rocking stuff, responsive tone stack that takes you to all sorts of different territories, and all at volume levels that can sit well with a drummer without frustrating the sound guy...man, what a great amp.
That goes to show; these are real stage amps for real deal players. It's a good reminder that what sounds good/bad solo is not necessarily going to translate the same once you actually get into a mix. What was too bright for me by myself was perfect once I got in a room with a drummer.
So...something I'm curious about: I'd love to get a better understanding of exactly how the tone stack/cut all interact with each other. I found the cool spreadsheet of different settings that Maz owners have been posting about...but I'd love to actually UNDERSTAND the interaction. I'm sure it will come the more I play the amp, but do you long-time Maz owners have any insight to offer?
