Hey, with the 2 soundclips on the "Z" site, how loud do you have to turn up the "ray" to get that tone......with just a little hair........is it volume driven?

I was getting the Stingray to sound like that using my tele bridge pickup from about 11 to 12 o'clock on the volume dial. It just got more aggressive after that. It does not get really dirty just more 'complex' as you go up from there. It has a lot of clean headroom but it is always rich and complex in nature. The same when it starts to breakup, it still stays cleanish just more snotty and aggressive while having great string to string definition. Of course use a great treble booster like the BSM RM booster you can get some amazing overdriven tones ala Brian May or Rory Gallagher(talk about a blues/rock amp!). In fact this amp loves all the drive pedals I have thrown at it so far. It loves the RC Booster/BB preamp/MJM blues devil combination. I love this amp! ;D

Hey ma Brotha! The Stingray rocked the tour. It was two band tour and I got to hang with one of my best friends and one amazing guitarist Pete Belec. He uses a Fender Hot Rod deluxe that had a huge Jensen alnico speaker in it. He used the Stingray for the first two nights of the tour and loved it. He wanted to know where he could get one! He always would say that he loved the amps I used and the tone I get but it was not his sound, and he still does say that but after playing his deluxe again on the third night he doesn't like his sound anymore and instead wants my sound or I should say the STINGRAY EXPERIENCE. Heh, heh, heh......... I did make him use my amp on purpose for the first two nights because we easily could have used his amp instead. I might have converted one more to Z amps(that was my intention..wink..wink...nudge...nudge). ;D

Bump.... I'm interested in how much clean headroom this puppy has as well. When does it start breaking up; and how distorted is it cranked? thanks I just posted a clip in the sounds forum with the Stingray wide open - volume on 10, driving it with a compressor. That's about as much distortion as you can get with a single coil, but I'm sure a humbucker could give a bit more hair.

Welcome back Arun, i guess you proved that resistance is futile when it comes to the Ray. Nice little sting you pulled off on the other player ;D
Bentop, smoking blues clip BTW. Your good man.
Any of you guys tried attenuating the Ray, make it give up the goods at lower volumes?

I should have mentioned that I had the Airbrake on the Stingray for that clip - two clicks down is all, but that drops the level about 4db or so. I don't really hear any tone impact from that level of attenuation.

thanks for the clip! (are you playing the rhythm on the left side too?....i haven't really heard any clips that had any warm tone[or chords], only biting solo stuff). take care corey Man, Yes it can get warm and phat! I wish I had a way to make a GOOD recording... I'd throw out some PHATNESS for ya... playing 7th/ 9th cords and hendrix-y stuff is purty cool... try that Foxy lady riff with a fat sounding boost/ od pedal and it's exploding outta the speakers! but the neatest thing is ( other than the fact that I'M STILL finding different ways to set 3 KNOBS and STILL finding new SOUNDS outta this thang)... that pedals I don't normally use ( like my Original Expandora) sound AWESOME through the RAY... I've always liked that pedal BUT through the ray it is SOOO FAT.... you mentioned warm, Talk about WARM... to borrow Oldsters term.. "SQUISHY ;D"/ SAG... complex... think the best Billy gibbons sound you've ever heard BUT with a DR Z! Man, guys this is a GREAT, GREAT AMP!! I wouldn't mind having another STANGRAY... as a back-up amp/ 2nd head..... Now I'd love to get an RC Booster, Luxury Drive, Keeley Katana boost and a couple more volume/ boost pedals ( and a Keeley compressor) to run through the RAY and see what they REALLY sound like and can make the RAY do... BOY this amp just Inhales pedals for breakfast! BTW on a totally different subject, I've been trying to listen to Bentops recording but can't ever get it to load/ play?? I have alot of problems with that.. It's not just with steves clip... I'm missin some good stuff...

Since I'm hosting that clip myself, you should be able to right click on the link and choose Save Target As... and download it to your computer. It's about 4 megabytes but once downloaded, it should play fine. It's just an mp3 file, so Windows Media Player is all that is needed. If THAT doesn't work from here, go to my Stingray page at www.gear.strayca.com/stingray.htm and right click and download from there. That should work...
