I was a single coil guy for, like, twenty years--now suddenly I only want to play humbuckers. Something about the smoothness, compression and sustain that just works for me right now, as I explore the high-ish gain blues thing. It's weird--it's like waking up one day in middle age and discovering that suddenly, after years of wearing tighty-whiteys, you're just screw it I'll go commando.

In short:
They sound better.
OK, guys, let's hear it, one way or the other!
(I play both, by the way)

For me it depends on the setting or music I am playing - I can't survive on just one type of pup (well, my HB's can split to single but don't sound REAL Tele or Stratty).

I need a HB in the bridge, I've come to that realization.
HSS is an ideal setup, but dual HBs with coil splitting options will do.

Other way around for me...was a gibbie guy for most of my playing life...last 10 years have been strat's,tele's.
Playing style has changed and the single coils just enhance it...with use right hand technique...s/t cant be duplicated.
I still love my les paul...but im not much of a distortion, need to have breakup player

I've got my P-90's on my Les Paul. But, my strat came with the older fender noiseless design which wasn't that great. I then went to Kinman's which sound great to my ears. So, my strategy is to never touch a strat with single coil pickups so that I don't get infected. See, you didn't read the label that those humbuckers have addictive qualities. So, I'm a single coil on the Les Paul and humbuckers kind of on the strat and don't touch any other guitars.

I went the other way as well. All the HB guitars are gone now except for Lucille, which I mostly keep for sentimental reasons. I even prefer Jazzmasters and P-90 archtops over HBs for jazz. It's all good.

I love humbuckers and P90s too. The tone I hear in my head is a humbucker through a British type amp. I spent long times trying to get there with a strat but moved on to a Les Paul and loving humbuckers and P90s since. That is the sound of a guitar to me.

That's why they make chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
As my Dad would say! :-) Eddie

I made the 20 yr transition from single coil to p90 to humbucker paf's
I still bounce from p90's to humbuckers.
However - the truth is, Les Paul got it right ! Lol...

Love my ES-335. Love my SG Standard. Also always chasing and can't get enough of Eddy Shaver's Strat sound on, well, anything he plays it on. REALLY depends on the gig/band/mood. I know what you're saying though...for years I was strictly a Strat/Tele guy, and started getting into humbuckers a lot more just in the past 10 years or less. Ya gotta change it up once in a while, but don't get rid of the single-coils...you'll come back around at some point.

Depends on the sound of the band I'm working with. I love them both kinda like my children.

It depends on the band setting and the kind of music I'm playing, but I prefer humbuckers most of the time. I tried to be a single-coil strat guy for 10 years and never really got the sound I wanted. In other words, it took me the better part of 10 years to figure out that I just needed to get something with 'buckers! Now I've got a tele I love, but most of the time I'm on my SG or........my strat that I put mini-hums in Talk about a unique sound!

I like 'em all. Singles, P-90s, Hums. Plus, it's a good excuse to have more guitars!

I was a single coil guy forever but in the last 2 years I have rounded out the herd to include some HB planks; they complete me...

Playing an LP, Jon? Could be: Different scale length. Different fingerboard. Your inner Gary Moore or Joe Bonamassa. Excessive pontoon boat use. Who knows?

I love them both but I'm a little more partial to single-coils. Each type forces me to play a little differently and, of course, it depends largely on the type of music which one I'd choose.

to me humbuckers are easier to play where you have to work it to play single coils....
