Hi, I'm a happy maz jr owner, especially with strat, but I've struggled to find a satisfactory sound with les paul. There seem to be quite a lot people using it with a paul, what are your favorite setting, especially when youre getting medium to max overdrive out of the amp WITHOUT pedals?? I'd also be interested in the pickups you like with maz jr.
It'd be great if you'd have sound samples to share with me..
Thanks, Jamo

Jamo,
Try putting the cut knob up to about 12:00 o'clock and take it from there............
My favorite Les Paul pups with the MAZ are WCR Darkbursts I have in an R8. Sounds killer.
Try putting the volume at about 2:00 o'clock and that should get you a nice breakup ala the Rolling Stones.

Hey, I currently have a Maz 18nr 1 12 on order, but the setting I had that pretty much sealed the deal for me was all the tones more or less 12noon, the cut a little past noon, volume at about 7-8 oclock and master around 10-11oclock. Totally sparkley and vox like for lack of a better term, and seemed to love the neck and the bridge PU of my 57 Reissue.

I use mostly single coils, but I've run an LP in there:
Vol: 2:00 Master: 10:00 Treb: 11:00 Mid: 1:00 Bass: 12:00 Cut: 12:00 Rev: 9:00
There are so many dern good settings, I'd say just roll with what works for you. But I gotta agree w/JoeYello about the Cut around 12:00...good luck!

With the LP and the MAZ 18, you cannot underscore enough the importance of good pickups. My LP came with the stock Gibson junk that was promptly removed for Lindy Fralins. Made all the difference in the world.
As for settings, I run the LP with the cut at 1:00, the master at 11:00, the volume at 2:00-3:00. Tone controls i adjust for the room.
It absolutely rocks with my LP now and totally responds to pick attack and volume knob adjustments on the guitar.
good luck. It took me a while to find what i was looking for with the LP and the MAZ jr also.

When I bought my first MAZ 18 head about 5 years ago I rarely played a Les Paul. I almost always grabbed a Strat. Once I started using the MAZ 18 with the Z Best cab I found that my enthusiasm for the Les Paul was completely renewed. I now play my '57 Historic about 50% of the time. Here are my settings, but keep in mind that this is a head through a Z Best 212.....they would change slightly for a combo:
Volume: 10...all the way up for max gain and max dynamic ability to go from clean to drive
Master: 11:00
Treble: 9:00
Mid: 10....all the way up
Bass: 10....all the way up
Cut: Start at zero play for a few minutes and let your ear adjust to the darkness.... then gradually bring up the Cut in small increments until you hear the amp open up just a tad. I usually end up at about 7:30 to 9:00, but some players feel this is a little too *creamy* for their tastes.
Reverb:......Uh......you do know that the *real* name of the MAZ 18 NR is the "Stu Don't Surf" model right?!!
Hope this helps.....

...holy smokes Stu....i dialed in yer settings on my 2-10 Maz Jr combo and plugged in my only humbucker guitar (73 SG)...thats some serious rockin tone man....reminded me of a cranked Carmen Ghia on (excuse the cliche) steroids and then some...you damn sure ain't gonna surf with that tone...thanks for the tip....

Exactly!!! The way that I run my MAZ it is definitely leaning more towards the British side of what that amp will do. I think that's why I don't like running reverb with my 18......I dial it up for max gain and then vary my attack to go from a pushed clean to a massive overdrive tone When I first got my 18 back in '99 or 2000 I initially thought the bass was a tad loose. I kept dialing the bass back farther and farther...seems logical....but eventually found that the bass actually tightened up when I cranked the bass knob. Works especially great with the Z Best cab!

I regretably sold my Jr NR head, but Stu's right on the money with the volume dimed it just cooked with 'buckers !!
Just try and not break out you Billy Gibbons and Angus licks !!!!
My tone controls and cut were usually at noon, master to the room/gig.....again this was a NR head...'cause..
Curt don't surf neither !!!!!
Now I play the 'lil 'ole Ghia....... ;D

I don't know Stu, but my 68 Paul runs close to what he says most of the time; however, if you experiment, you'll find all kinds of good and greasy sounds. Sometimes, I'll run the volume to 90% of max and then use a lower master and play on the bridge pickup. You can get BB Kings fuzzy/bassy tone (the way he used to sound before the Line 6), or you can crank the tone knowb on either of the pickups and get some piercing sounds, especially if you play with the cut knob. I have found huge amounts of variety with the Paul thru the Maz Jr. Experiment with every knob on the guitar and the amp.
