Hey everyone. I've been looking for "the last amp I'll ever buy". After reading so much about the Maz on here, I came across a very clean, new looking Maz 18 NR 1x12 & pulled the trigger. It looks so clean that it makes me apprehensive. All the "what ifs". So we'll see in a day or two when it gets here. Hopefully nothing wrong.

Jaguarguy,
I was feeling ostentatious because I have a new Maz18, a new custom Tele, and I am building a Marshall 74x. That selection and display is outrageous.
I ordering something new.

Welcome to the Forum - a lot of good people and information here. Last amp you'll buy? ? I think not - look at my signature - these amps can be addictive. Yeah I know, famous last words. Do you have one of everything? If you were on a deserted island that somehow had power, which one would want w/ you? Ya know besides food & water.

Welcome aboard. I started my Z journey with a MAZ, which I still have. As jaguarguy noted, these are addictive. Picking one is like "which one is your favorite of all your children?" Besides, my answer changes frequently.
At the bottom of my signature below is a link to a tone sheet for the MAZ. It may be helpful in your explorations.

The Junior was my first too, congrats! Just say, "the last brand of amp that you'll ever buy", just to be safe.

...If you were on a deserted island that somehow had power, which one would want w/ you? Ya know besides food & water. Biting my tongue not to say Ginger or Maryanne right now... ( 195db, stick around here and you'll come to understand the real "great debate" around here.) Congrats & enjoy that amp! My MAZ amazes me everytime I plug into it; in fact, I think there'll be a LOT of people who'd argue that the MAZ 18 NR in a 1x12 format is indeed THE perfect desert-island amp. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with them.

My desert island amp just might be the Antidote. or maybe the Maz GT - so long as the neighboring islands are not too close!

It finally arrived. Trying to figure how to post a pic. It is very clean & sounds great so far. (Only played about 20 min) One thing I notice, there is a noise that sounds like someone blowing into a mic. Very low, random, steady but not continuous if that makes any sense - almost like leaves rustling. Happens w/ or w/o guitar plugged in. Not noticed when playing but when sitting quiet. Tried moving speaker cable & turning knobs but nothing so far seems to be the direct cause. Any ideas?

If the EL84s have retainer clips/springs, unclip -- no need to remove the retainers completely. If neither of these helps, it's most likely some other tube issue. Here are Z's troubleshooting tips

As far as I can tell the tubes are seated. Guess I'll move onto to the Dr Z troubleshooting procedure. Hopefully I can get to it later tonight. In the meantime here's a vid of the noise. It really stands out at around 13 sec. -Thanks.

v1 and power tubes have always been culprit for me....nice looking rig though...keep at it.

You don't happen to have a cell phone somewhere near the amp, do you? If so, try powering it down completely. A long shot, I know, but cells can definitely cause weird interference.
On the MAZ, one non-power tube issue I had was the reverb driver (it's usually a 12AT7).

Appears to be the EL84's. There was also a buzz that started to get louder & one of them looked little more blue than normal. So I shut it down, & started to go through the Z troubleshooting. I put EL84's back in & heard the low noise again (no buzz). Swapped them out & no noise. Thanks doctorice. I'll probably just retube it for my own piece of mind. But so far so good.

Preamp tubes usually last longer than EL84s. If all is well now that the power tubes have been replaced, hang on to the other tubes as spares if you go forward with the re-tube. One thing to keep in mind, which you may already know, is that rectifiers can fail with little or no warning and leave you with no sound. Consensus seems to be that NOS rectifiers are much less prone to failure than current production.
