Hey, new to the board, but a very satisfied Dr. Z Maz 18 2x10 (reverb) owner since 2003. I have done hundreds of gigs including large outdoor festivals with the 18 and it has been great. The Z-Lux is enormously appealing to given the light weight and additions of tremolo and perhaps a more washy verb. Does the Z-Lux have close to the same punch as the 18 and (perceived) power and has anyone compared these two amps (appears to be the same front end, absent the "cut of the Maz)? Interested in any opinions on a comparison, but know few have these yet and have read the comparisons to the Jaz.
I am strongly considering getting the ZLux, but would likely have to sell my beloved Maz to swing it. Thanks!

After 30 days on Z-talk you can sell you Maz right here. I would wait 'til you get the 'Lux to A/B them. I'm getting mine (Z-Lux) Wednesday, tomorrow !!!!!
You may have a return option on the Lux. Try to have both in your hands and an option to Return Lux or sell Maz.
Remember you have had that amp for 12 years and (your Maz) EL 84s are very percussive.
The only thing I have had for a long time is my Grosh RT Classic (strat type) 18 years.

Me too! I have a bad back, lugging speaker and a head around is a pain. The lightweight of the Lux and I have Fender 68 Custom Dlx that I like a lot. But at 42 lbs total & a Dr Z amp and it's a Lux, hand wired with MV, boost, verb and trem...I had to give it a go...20/40 watts too. Mine will be here in 10 hours on the big brown truck. I use pedals to get that percussive Marshall thing. I have not had a Maz 18 or Sr. for 8 years. I had both. I would A/B them, if you can swing it....Jess sayin. The Z-Lux and an hand wired 18 watt Marshall combo may be just it for me .damn meds are kicking in. lol @#$%&*

JammerGreg it looks like we have similar tastes. I too have the 68 custom deluxe and a Marshall 1974 X. Loving the 68 with strats and couldn't wait for the z lux but my Maz 18 ain't going nowhere! Might be tempted if a used Z lux pops up in UK.

Thanks for the responses and feedback. As luck would have it, there was one already in stock locally (Cream City Music) and I had an opportunity to spend an hour with one yesterday. It was fantastic, but won't replace my Maz. The tremolo is absolutely spectacular and the amp sounded great at 20 and 40 watts. The reverb wasn't exactly a surf's up reverb, but very usable and I don't go above 2 on a Fender amp typically anyway. Like the Maz, one can dial in a lot of sounds with the very dynamic EQ. The weight on these is great for lugging around.
I walked away essentially wanting both and will very likely acquire one in the near future, but won't be funding it with proceeds from my Maz. These amps sound differently enough that it wouldn't be replacement for the Maz and the Maz basically ended my long amp quest a long time ago. It sounds very similar to a Deluxe Reverb (with the advantage of the ability to dial in more mids) and the 40 watts gives more headroom if you need it.
I am keeping the Maz, but will look to add this to lineup for a definitely different flavor of Z in the near future. It is a great amp, but so is my Maz. By the way, I use the Maz for jazz gigs and that percussive quality described above is one of the reasons I think I like it so much. I can dial in great bop sounds, Grant Green tone, or with some delay, more modern sounds with ease and they all sound great. This would be a great jazz amp as well, but definitely different.
Either way, the amp is a real winner for Dr. Z, but he already had superstar with the Maz too. Thanks for the indulgence.

Good to hear nbh...I have found that the maz 18 "might" be the only "z" I really need...I did say need...do I want other's...oh h yeah.
The z lux is very appealing, but I really have found my "voice" and tone in the maz 18 and the lowend for latin, jazz, finger style percussiveness is hard to beat...therapy combo in the future?

My very quick take is that the EL84 / MAZ gives you "compressed and chimey" and the Z-Lux 6V6 is "bloom and sparkle." YMMV. Both great amps; both keepers.

If you want that old Black-Face tone the Z-Lux is a Great amp. The Maz is an EL84 tone monster in it's own right.
I love my Lux last night at a jam. I left the boost on all night. Great New product Doc.
