upon recommendations from MarkT on this forum , I just got the Celestion cream alnico . and just WOW. I am strictly an EL84 guy (maz jr & stangray) with Alnicos always - just works for me perfectly for my country playing (teles & strats) - I like a pretty clean chimey tone & use a comp & a light OD for leads. so this is just MY 2 cents . This speaker is is very interesting - kinda right in between the blue & the gold ! - the gold is great in a larger cab for larger venues. but i don't like it in a small cab (studio cab) or inside, and always had to misdirect the amp & i didn't think that was right. (too sterile or stiff maybe - just off somehow - only inside) - but the cream is like a blue , but higher power handling & breaks up nice like a blue , just glorious. I am rambling , i don't know how to explain ** so if you are an el84 guy & like experimenting with speakers & cabs - ya gotta get a cream alnico asap - that is all

Glad you are enjoying the new speaker. Thanks to you and MarkT in the other thread I have a Cream waiting at home for me from Sweetwater. I'll be swapping it out with the Gold in my MAZ 18nr and will report back in a few days...

Another is in my future and may have a Gold or two for sale soon. ( never in a million years thought I'd say that! Never say never! )

yeah , i keep re-playing with all & gold. blue & cream & keep changing my mind - but that the fun of it. *** I would now say that the cream is truly like a higher wattage blue , has same character & break up as a blue - the gold is a bit stiffer & cleaner , but still the best for stangray or z wreck

update : I played my stangray with my gold outside and absolutely hated it , it's crazy , everywhere I play , things change so much, every amp & speaker sound soooo different. I am going to stick with the cream alnico & hopefully it will work anywhere. >>>the research continues .................

One thing I've realized about playing outside is that you don't get the same reflections that you'd normally get when playing inside. That can be good and bad. It's good because you can turn your amp up way louder, but bad in the sense that you don't get the sound of the room bouncing back at you. On several occasions when playing outside I have put the top half of my amp case, or a guitar case or something, behind my amp to reflect the sound back towards the front to me. It helps fill the sound out more when you are outside.

And how do you like those Bardens? Do you have the Modern or Gatton set?

I just received one from Sweetwater and holy smokes this speaker sounds great. It has a lot of the character I liked with the broken-in Blue but much better low end. Also it doesn't seem as bright as the gold to me, which I like. Overall this is just a great speaker. This was in my Ghia. Can't wait to put it in the Maz and Vox amps.
