Yeah, I'm not sure who's buying those. $8,500 for a R8/9/0? Crazy. But, hey, its ever so slightly more "correct"/"accurate" or whatever the hell that means.

It means nothing.
The question is: how does it play and sound?
And one of my main guitars is a 2010 CS336, which plays and sounds great, by the way.

I paid $2,800 for my 2010 R8 Les Paul brand new in 2010. So good deals are out there.

Still a tad less than those Lesters on Reverb.com.

My R8 is long gone . Why pay that sort of money when you can order a Corsa from Larry Corsa and spec the build yourself and end up with a better playing and sounding guitar for a he'll of a lot less.

Agree, would rather order a Corsa and buy a couple of Z's to go with it:)

My Epiphone LP Tribute Plus is a pretty good guitar for $700 ... With Gibson 57 classic pickups.

big brands cost too much...and you pay for the brands. i'd rather look for some good deal (there are many out there) than financing the marketing machinery of those brands buying a new guitar. and if you are looking for great tone but do not stick on brands...there are a few small luthiers building extraordinary guitars at reasonable prices

Everybody talks about "vintage," like my '65 ES330 and my '67 BF Vibrolux Reverb.
I looked in a mirror earlier this morning and realized that I'm vintage, too (and not "new old stock," either).
Anybody else having this happen?

Wow...I could have bought 3 of my 58 VOS Les Paul for the price of a true historic 59. Wow..... I have a custom Asher Marc Ford Model and a custom New Orleans Guitar Co JB14 and never got near that price for either hand made build. I did wait 7 to 9 months for each but they were both 1000% worth the wait. Oh well. As in all things YMMV Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards

Yeah--it's out of hand. Got a decent deal on my '14 model R8 a few weeks ago, though still not cheap by any means--but it had pretty much everything I wanted in a Lester and I knew a big price increase was coming. Basically they're trying to extract maximum dinero from the boomers before we all retire and go on fixed incomes. Younger players don't care as much about Fender and Gibson stuff, apparently, and don't have the money to go high end. Also, the vintage market dies with us.

For the price of the new True Historics I would expect it to be absolutely spot on original spec and materials with absolutely no QC issues play like a dream and sound spot on vintage. If I wanted to spend that much on a piece of flash furniture I would buy one of Nick Hubers creations.

The whole thing has served to de-motivate me from even bothering about any Les Paul in excess of $1500.00. I would need a research assistant to know what the differences are. I'd like to think it was a simple as just looking at a guitar on the wall, asking to take a look and sit down to noodle a bit on it unplugged, and asking if it came with a case. But no, those days seem gone to me. It seems to be out of control.

I was chatting to a friend of mine who actually manages to make a living as a professional musician (lucky guy!) and is a fabulous guitarist too, and as we talked about this we came full circle................ forget what "model" "year" "replica" etc., etc., the guitar is. Just play it and if it speaks to you, and you can afford it, then buy it and play the snot out of it!! I REALLY like that attitude!

That said, if you can find a nice light one you can still get good deals on used R8s. Of the Gibson historics, the R8 seems to be the ignored middle child, which is a good thing if you're looking to buy one. I love both of mine.

IF I ever get close to looking at one, I will defer to your first hand knowledge and know I have a Z bro who won't guide me wrong. Prolly easier than going to the Gibson board and sorting out all the cork sniffing over there! The water is still a bit deep for me, it's just those darn finishes!

Generally a used R8 in minty condition will run around $2800 with figured top, and $2400 with a solid color "paint" top. My LaWonda was one of the latter--some fool let her go, and I was happy to take her in, sans depreciation. 8.4 lbs of solid muscle, she's the bar-gig queen and a bad-arse blues machine. Nice chunky neck, and in all other respects as far as I can tell functionally identical to an R9. Dave's has a ton of new flame-top R8s in stock right now, too, and patient buyers can expect them to start showing up on the used market within a month or two. I snapped one up right away--just happened to hit a bit of lucky timing--as the sales guys at Dave's said, it's pretty much an R9 at an R8 price.
