Yeah, I'm no RF but this backing track sure helps. As always, I played this without the recorder and had a really great run, which I could not repeat with the recorder on - why does that always happen? Anyway, this is the Grosh Bent Top Custom set to the Bridge humbucker going straight in to the Mazerati GT. I have the Airbrake set to bedroom level (full up though) and that's plugged in to the 1x12 Convertible cab (back closed, V30). Delays and compression added in Pro Tools. This is over four minutes of self-indulgent wanking, so you've been warned. FordishGT.mp3

Definitely got that Fordish tone, Steve. When I saw the thread, I thought you would be using the Zendrive. Great playing as always.

Wow...you don't know how badly I would love to link that to TGP and wait for the reactions.
I hope that I don't stir up any bs, but let me say that you nailed the RB thing for a fraction of the price some of the guys there are spending. I would put your tone up against most of the RB tones I have heard lately.
Nicely done and great playing too.

Great clip Steve! What PU's are in that Grosh? That humbucker was a special wind that Don had made by DiMarzio to match the levels of the two Fralin Blues Specials in that guitar (so the sales pitch went). So I would say it's a low output humbucker, but not something you could buy stand alone.

It just goes to show you there's more than one way to skin a cat. That sure sounds like Robben Ford's tone.. oh, and nice playing too!! I guess I gotta go buy an Airbrake now...

Thanks! I don't think everyone hears that though. I posted it on the gi-NORMOUS Dumble/Ford thread on TGP and they just ignored me.

You'll appreciate the Airbrake, no question. Without it, you can't get to half the tones your amps are capable of, unless you're ok with blowing the walls down.

I posted it on the gi-NORMOUS Dumble/Ford thread on TGP and they just ignored me. I check out the Gear Page as well from time to time. The Robben - D#mble sound they go for is as promoted by one or two highly regarded guys. That's the problem with endless tweaking and thinking too much when going for a sound.. they've tweaked and tweaked and I find it to be nothing like the Robben sound at all.

Yeah, I listened to what they're doing and I was really perplexed. Didn't sound like Robben Ford at all to me. But as in every other case, we all listen for something different. I'm glad - it would be a huge disappointment if everyone I came across sounded just like me...

I think you've totally nailed the tone! Great job. Now I needs to get me one them GT's. The GT must stand for "Great Tone".

Well I think it depends on what Ford tune you're listening to. I've heard him sound like this, and I've heard him sound more like my RXES, and I've even heard him sound more like my Stingray. To me the idea of a "Robben Ford Tone" is a myth. The guy smokes - THAT's the reality.
