Several folks have asked me how these two amps compare, so I figured I'd show you so you can draw your own conclusions. This clip has the JS on one side and the ES on the other. Both sides are Celestion Alnico Golds in my stereo THD cab. Setup: Grosh Retro Classic VT > Radial JX-2 A/B/Y Radial Out-1 > RX Junior Strength > Airbrake (1 click) > Celestion Alnico Gold Radial Out-2 > RX Extra Strength > Airbrake (4 clicks) > Celestion Alnico Gold Both Amps: Bass: Dimed Middle: Dimed Treble: Noon Volume: 3 o'clock (8 on the dial) Overdrive: On Master (Jr): Dimed You'll notice the ES seems to have a bit more saturation than the JS - I figure this is the normal difference you might hear between two different preamp tubes. I'm not sure what's in either amp actually - I assume the Doc shipped a Dario MiniWatt in the JS but I got the ES from Drew and I've never opened the back, so it's whatever he sent me. ALL of the saturation differences as the clip goes forward are from rolling the guitar volume up and down. As you can hear, these amps clean up like no other. You can set it for massive gain and get all the way back to pristine just from changing your volume control on your guitar. You'll hear the Junior first, so it will always be on that side. There is one spot where my foot hit the combine switch and both amps came on. That wasn't my intent, so I shut it off right away, but there IS one brief moment of glory with both amps on at the same time. RX_Noodles.mp3

Thanks Curt. Yeah, the two amps did sound subtly different, but you sure can tell they are both Prescriptions, can't you?

ya know, it seems i REALLY like the Gold with lower powered amps....odd huh? Yeah, even though it's a 50 watt speaker it seems to crunch up just beautifully even at low volumes. I love those Golds. They sound great no matter what I plug into them.

Thanks Steve. Seems like you got a good handle on recording huh? Sounds great and it's cool to hear them both side by each like that!

Thanks Steve. Seems like you got a good handle on recording huh? Sounds great and it's cool to hear them both side by each like that! Thanks. It's just a matter of having done it a few times and knowing what seems to work and what seems to not work. To me the most significant thing about making a good recording is having good mics and knowing where to place them. The rest is just getting the signal up to where its level is just below redline. I know a lot of guys like to record with SM 57's, but if you've ever looked at their frequency response, they have a characteristic not unlike a speaker. And when you change speakers, you know it totally changes the sound of your amp. I just hate the idea of spending all this time to get the exact tone I want from my amp, and then sticking a filter in between my speaker and my recorder. So I try to use the best mics I can afford so that what I'm recording is exactly what I'm hearing. Seems to work to my satisfaction, and I'm pretty picky. That's one of the nice things about the Rode NT-1's I'm using - many large diaphragm condenser mics are not rugged enough to put in front of a guitar amp, but the Rode mics totally work great in that capacity. That was an accident - I didn't buy them for that, but when I discovered how great they sound for micing the guitar, they've been my mainstay ever since.

Nice Steve! That's a fun clip and as always excellent playing and balance between both amps, (i.e. both amps get equal licks). The RXES has GT 12ax7m tubes in V1&3. Dario miniwatt in the V2 and a sovtek 5ar4. I tried swaping out different V1&3 combinations including NOS 5751 and 12Ax7s. The 12ax7ms gave the amp more of the fine RX imediate attack.
As always thanks for sharing and creating GAS for us mere mortals.

Thanks Drew, that helps fill in the fine detail. Great amp - I'm going to have to look into adding the footswitch mod to it.
