One of my favorite amps ever is the Maz 18. I had one for a couple years and sold it off for an M12 when those were new. I liked the M12, but the Maz was more versatile IMO and missed it. Fast forward to today and I'm sitting in my gear room staring at a Two Rock Studio Pro 22 head and cab. Two Rock produces one of my favorite tones of all time, you know that John Mayer Trio tone where it's just so thick and rich. But, that's just not me and I'm learning the hard way.
Guess I'm on a beeline for a Maz 18 again...really wish I had followed my gut and got the Maz!!!

I'd love to get my hands on a Studio Pro 22, but I don't think I'm ready to let go of my Maz. Hmmm.

The problem is that even though Two Rock produces this huge fat beautiful clean tone, they just don't suit my style. I like to dig in and get chimey dirt, and I just can't with the Two Rock.

It's hard not to keep trying stuff sometimes with as much cool and amazing sounding stuff as there is but when something is right for you it's better to work on playing rather than wondering. I've kinda learned like you that my ears like a lot of tones that sound great but are not the proverbial ME, like you said; once you find yourself in the tone maze it gets easier to recognize yourself in the -" I wonder if I'd like that..." Good luck on the MAZ hunt....what color you thinking?

That's what I like so much about the M12: if you aren't quite getting your tone, try a different pedal. It's a real chameleon of an amp. Bonus that it sounds so good at practice volume.

My Maz was my first Z. I remember spending quite a bit of time directly comparing the Maz and Ghia, and remember actually preferring the Ghia in a lot of ways. Went with the Maz because I felt like the EQ and reverb would make a huge difference in the long run, and at that time I wasn't sure when I would ever get to spend that kind of money on a new amp.
100% correct decision. That was 9 years ago (!!!!) and its still going strong. Never had to start a thread like this. Owned a Ghia later on and would gladly own one again, but I definitely made the right choice.
Cheers!

Black and tan My first Maz was blonde and it was sweet, but I'd really like surf green I think. Either way, a Maz is a Maz!

When I sold my Maz, I actually bought an M12. I did like it, I didn't care for the base tone as much as the Maz. I felt like the Maz could pull off more tones with the EQ and I felt like the Maz was a lot louder. Of course, that could have been a result of the Greenback. I had the Maz for about 2 years and only kept the M12 about 3 months. What do you guys think between the Maz and the Therapy? The Therapy peaks my interest, but I really want EL84 chime.

I love my Therapy but if you know you like the MAZ just get a surf green one...I would say you might miss the chime as the Therapy vs Ghia was pretty much similar opposites....similar in some ways but more bold/stiff/big for the Therapy. The Therapy seems to hold up under heavy sounds more where the Ghia/Monza seemed to buckle/compress/bloom...Therapy keeps chuggin' right on thru. I don 't think I have ever played the Therapy while thinking," nice chime". The cleans seem American the dirt seems to do both sides of the pond. i have no real experience with the MAZ but I would guess they are different since Doc doesn't need to copy himself.

Yeah--very different. I wouldn't call the Therapy a chimey amp--not like the Maz. I've been running my M12 mostly through a Gold, and sometimes in a 2x12 setup with a Gold and a G12H30. On the high setting, it's plenty loud for about 99% of what I do.

Going on 11 or 12 years with my Maz. It's not going anywhere. Sometimes I wish I had bought it as a head & 2x10 cab.i stead of combo. It sounds huge into a z-best, also with another 2x10 cab connected, but now it's so much a part of me, I don't know if I'd change anything.

I've had the NR head, the reverb combo and now the NR studio combo, which, with a Gold, is just about the perfect grab 'n go. I don't see myself letting go of it--although I thought about it for a second after watching a couple of Two-Rock Studio 22 vids. Cool amps!

Very clean, and the breakup is as smooth as anything I've played....but that's the problem! Everything is very polite with this amp and it's hard to get it to be mean lol. It's a very jazzy/bluesy amp and clear as a spring sky. It's such a thick clean tone that chime isn't in the bag.

Sold my 18 to get the 8 - still a Maz at a different volume. Maybe... Got the 8 'cause the 18 I tried was a bit too much for what I'm doing now. I can always bring out the Mini Z when I need a bit more volume . ME

I just felt it saturated way too quickly... but sometimes I wonder. I tried it out in a very dry studio room where all amps sounded a lot more quiet than in real life applications and after 30 minutes of getting to know the 18 the 8 just felt like it was unable to cope. It sounded flat and compressed. But now I have my Brake Lite on 3 or 4 even on most stages... so I keep wondering.

Hi there, I'm a newbie here after picking up my blonde maz18 1x12 combo today. Got it 2nd hand from Coda Music (absolutely first class shop), it's like new and sounds great at various volume levels, so versatile. Looking forward to exploring the tone options laid down in the list kindly provided on this site . She's my first Z, and must say I did plenty of research on this forum regarding this amp and its flexibility. Let the fun begin....

Just an update...
I decided to give the Two Rock another few weeks. It's not easy to sell an amazing amp and cab when you love everything about it. I just don't have much time to play guitar with young kids and feel like having a $2500 stack upstairs overkill. I'd like to sell it and get a used Maz and pocket some cash but just need to think on it.

I just got done playing the Two Rock and here are my fresh observations. I don't care for it dirty with humbuckers. It's too full and bass heavy. It seems awfully muddy in the EAD strings. Now, anything played in the higher registers sounds fat and juicy. Loved the amp with a strat. When I owned my Maz I loved everything about it. As much as I want to love the Two Rock it is just too muddy when you run it dirty with pedals. If I played just clean I'd dig it more. Cleans are stunning...that's the hard part.

I think I'll pull my Maz 18 off the shelf for a while tonight now that you mention it !

MAZ 18 Jr. with Reverb and the Tone Bypass Option.
Run it into whatever speaker you like.
Use whatever pedal you like.
Amp searching done.

Haha I got greedy and thought the M12 would be better somehow. It was a little rounder around the edges, but that's what I miss about the Maz. It honestly was the best amp I've ever had. You know what I'll miss about the Two Rock? How it looks sitting atop the Two Rock vertical 2x12 in the corner of the room!

Ya know, I think it's Jaguar Mike that has a STEAL of a deal on a MAZ chassis right now. Get a head cab and you're rocking.
Keep us posted on the search to regain a MAZ.
Best, Eddie
