Hi Guys,
For a while now, I'm trying to find a way to have more gain but with clarity. Let's say Gary Moore-ish. Marshall and humbuckers I know. Just to give an idea.
What I'm using is a Maz Jr - TAD EL84-CZ and a JJ12AX7 in the V1, low input. Z-Best cabinet Master around noon - Volume to room. Strat and Tele
Last pedal I've tried is a Keeley modded RAT. Very cool pedal but in combination with the Maz, the amount of bass is insane. And even with the gain around 10 o'clock (on the RAT) the clarity is gone and it sounds more like a metal monster.
Yesterday I've tried a Lovepedal Woodrow on a Carmen Ghia 1x12. When putting the gain almost on max, an amount of bass was lost which might be just what I'm looking for. I'll check this pedal later on with the Maz.
But meanwhile, I'm looking for some pointers or advice from you guys.
Cheers SonoftheBlues

If you're using the Volume knob to suit the room, you might be keeping the MAZ gain on too much leash. Where do you generally end up setting V?
If you've not done so already, you might try cranking the tone knobs up all the way and bring V up well past noon. Then dial back the tone knobs (and adjust Cut) to shape the sound.
And if it's blues tone, you can't go wrong trying to emulate the sound Buddy Whittington gets with a Strat through a MAZ. His settings, and a bunch of others, are indicated in the tone sheet, which you can access via the link in my signature.

Around 9 o'clock and that's pretty loud. I've already been down the road of attenuators: don't like it. Tried a 1x12 with greenback and gold: don't like it. It will never give you the "oomph" of a 2x12 like the Z-best. If I recall correctly, working the other way around, putting the volume around noon and use the master for overall volume, will make the amp more harsh and thinner. But I'll try again. Putting the V and MV at noon is a No No for the places I play in. I'm well aware of the tone sheet, thanks. Disadvantage of it is that the kind of tubes, guitars, speakers, cabs etc are just as important as how you put the knobs of your amp.So to me it's kind of irrelevant. No offense of course.

Have you tried just a simple clean boost?

Have you tried just a simple clean boost? Yes, I have a treble booster on my board. It helps a bit indeed. I think that what I'm trying to achieve is going to be pretty hard. What I'll try to do next rehearsal is to push the pre-amp harder and take it from there.

You might want to try Master all the way up, volume very low (probably not past 9 o'clock), all other knobs at noon and tone and gain achieved through a boost or overdrive pedal. Would you let me know?

I don't think a treble booster will help as much as a clean boost. I may be wrong. I like the bearfoot sea blue EQ in front of mine. I know it can make it sound bigger and it's not an aggressive pedal and can stay on or set it where it can push the front some and use guitar volume or cut on and off.

I'll try the different suggestions and report back. I'm also thinking the bridge pickup of my Tele is set a little to high. This might also take away the clarity. Oh well, so many parameters. Sometimes it drives me nuts and I just start playing and don't think about too much.

Problem solved!
Lowered the bridge pickup a bit and now it sounds how I like it.

I've played through a Maz Jr Reverb for about 10 years. I put a 12AT7 in V1, Mullard power tubes, play though hi input, have a volume pedal at the end of the pedal board backed off a little, guitars full up, Volume 10:30; Treble 12:00; Middle 9:00; Bass OFF; Master to room but usually no higher than 12:00; Cut OFF; add a little reverb. OCD and Fulldrive pedals set with just a little gain and no volume boost, cascaded for dirtiest tones. I also have an RC pedal after the overdrives, when it's on it's set to REDUCE the volume, I turn it off for a lead boost. Works for me, can get clean funk guitar to Marshall tones with clarity, and everything in between. I play mostly Gibsons.
