I'm not very much into jazz, but I do appreciate Nels Cline a lot. I'm a huge Wilco fan so that's how I got to know his solo work. I never knew much of Julian Lage, but he's a fantastic player as well. These two guys are quite the duo. I really enjoy listening to them because it's so much different than what I listen to on a daily basis. It took me a little while to really hear what was going on when listening to such strange harmonies and chord structures, but this interview/performance really helps me understand and appreciate what they do and how they do it. I encourage you to take a break and watch this whole thing.

O cool !!! Thanks for this post. I posted the two of them playing thru a couple Maz 18 at Chicago Music not to long ago .... Stoked to watch it. Nels is really a good influence musically. He's not a total gear snob and looks at things in terms of enjoyment more so than functionality, or fitting to the situation rather than personal preference. Just a great musical influence.
Not to mention when I saw WILCO live on their The Art of Almost album tour......PERFECT PERFORMANCE by the band. So fitted together with NO ONE standing out. Such a beautiful display of 'song-men-ship'

Such a beautiful display of 'song-men-ship' That was exactly my take on the band when I saw them on the prior tour. Nels is a monster and even though I've not always appreciated his work with the Nels Cline Singers I love that he plays to his own muse. I did watch the above video a while ago and liked it more than I thought I would. It's always great to be pleasantly surprised by a musician you already admire.

I also got to see Wilco on their Art of Almost tour! Great show! Then I got to see Jeff Tweedy just a few months after on his solo tour which was absolutely amazing as well. Anyway, both Nels and Julian have kind of opened my eyes quite a bit more for what the possibilities are when it comes to composition and guitar playing. Not only are they technical wizards, but beasts of passion when it comes to the guitar and expressing one's personality and emotion through a song and instrument. Really cool stuff.
