Dropped off my Strat for a new nut/setup yesterday, and played a few things. One of them was a red Collings I-35 Deluxe. Wow. Still thinking about it, and I didn't even plug it in. damn.
Also so played a birth year (for me, 1974) Les Paul Standard and Deluxe. Both were pretty light weight, but kinda meh in tone/resonance. Also played a 1965 SG special that was kinda neat, but I didn't like the neck so much. But, man, that Collings.

That's a fact about Collings. I played one about 4 years back and still can't get the feel of that neck out of my head. Collings are just trouble...Ask MarkT

WARNING!! Be very careful! Those Collings guitars are very addictive. Much like Dr Z amps......but considerably more expensive.
My name in markT and I have it.

I don't play my 290 out all the time b/c it's one of those damn I love this thing too much style guitars. Effortless to play and tone for days. Can't imagine how swell the 35 Deluxe is in hand.

It was really nice. I have no need, though. Or space. I don't really GAS for much these days. Nice to see what a great product they're putting out. The neck joint on those things is sublime.

Love my Collings 290. I do play out with it and like it better than my LP as it so versatile. You get great cleans as well as raunchy hard rock sounds and everything in-between. With 11's , it is still easy to play and sustains for days. Just a superior instrument. I tried an I-35 deluxe at a music store and fell in love also. If I ever get that much cash together, I would go for that over a 335 custom shop any day. A work of art!

Aaaaaaaghhh. So, I had to drop my Kauer off today to get some fret sprout taken care of. Cold/dry winter here, and the guitar was made in sunny/temperate CA. Oh well, no biggie. And the I-35 deluxe is still hanging on the wall. I played it plugged into a Swart AST. (My fave amp). That might have been a mistake. . Holy mother of everything good, that is a fantastic guitar. And, it's there on consignment. For less than an I-35 laminate in new condition. It's pristine, too. I may not have mentioned this before, but I had a wrist injury last spring (now mostly better), but one of the things that continues to bother me is playing on thinner guitar necks. That's why I replaced the neck on my Strat a month or so ago (problem solved). But, my Eastman hollow body, which I really love, has been giving me fits. It's a thinner, wider neck, and my wrist aches after about 20 minutes or so. I'd have to get rid of the Eastman to get the Collings. Mostly for space reasons, but also, I probably don't need two guitars that are so similar. I'm ashamed to say I'm thinking about it. And, looking forward to (and dreading) picking up my Kauer. It's a good thing I'm not into boats, hookers, or blow. That could really get expensive.

Lee, that guitar is absolutely beautiful! Now I'm going to have to jump in my truck and drive to a store in Austin just to see one in person!

Mmmm, Merlot. Not just for drinking. Though I'm drinking in the beauty of that guitar. Looks a lot like an Oxblood Les Paul I'd like to own.

More fuel for thought......... Man, that's nice. Is that a regular I-35, or the laminate model? Still thinking about that guitar. Argh.

Although I love all my guitars, this one is one I'd miss most if the unthinkable happened.. So, I guess that makes it my favorite. Period. It's a I-35LC....not Deluxe. With Throbaks. The only difference in the regular I35LC and Deluxe model is the Ivoroid knobs, neck & headstock binding & fretboard inlays and truss rod cover... Good luck with your decisions ...

The one I'm looking at is the solid wood (not laminate) deluxe. Its been there on consignment for a couple months. I prefer the solid wood - that's what my Eastman is, but full hollow, not semi. I really like that guitar, but the thin/wide neck aggravates my left wrist issue. Fatter necks don't bother me. That's the only reason I'm even considering it. I really like the tone, and controlled feedback I can get with the Eastman, though. Sigh. I'll probably play the Collings again when I pick up my other guitar - maybe on Friday. Come to think of it, it kind of has to be Friday, or I'm not going to be able to get out there for a while.

So, I went to that shop on Friday. Picked up my guitar, and played the Collings again. And...I'm over it.
It's a fantastic guitar, but I really prefer the full hollow body tones/feedback I get from my Eastman. The Collings is superior in almost every way - fit and finish, neck size/shape, but I really like the extra woodiness/air that comes from full, rather than semi-hollow construction.
I'm just going to have to deal with the skinnier neck on my Eastman. Played it for a while this weekend, and it's just perfect sounding for my needs.
GAS resisted!

It was not an instant love (other than the visual).... took me a while to get used to it.... Now, I can't put it down.... Now THAT is what I didn't need to hear. I gave one a brief spin a while ago when in the 'closest' Z dealer's (2 hours away) and although it was immaculate and sounded amazing (unplugged) the neck was just a little too big for me. I think I probably could get used to it, but that is something I really don't need. I mean, I could always convince myself that I really need a quality semi-hollow, but . . . . ugh. Beautiful guitar, you stinker!

^^^^ Everything seemed awesome about this guitar except the sound. I usually don't prefer the sound of Humbucker guitars (except my SG). So I'm usually all about teles and strats; and I have a Collings Soco with TV Jones Filtertron pups that I greatly preferred, so that hampered me wanting to spend the time to experiment with the I-35. It took me about 6 months to "dial in" one of my amps to match this guitar. I couldn't find a sound I liked with any other amp except a 57 Tweed Bandmaster..... Now, nothing else sounds as good as this pairing. You can ask Sean and MarkT....it took me a while....

Collings sure makes some beautiful guitars. Haven't played one and I'm afraid to. (They look like budget busters waiting to happen) Guitars that look that good are hard to resist especially when they sound as good as you guys report.
