Hi guys, I've got to buy a good wah to use with the jazz band. I need good classic tones for Earth, Wind & Fire, funk stuff, 60's and 70's soundtrack type tunes. I've got an old Cry Baby but it's not right, the sweep is way too radical and it just is too intense. Adds way too much to the tone, and not in a good way! So I'm researching and looking around it looks like CAE, Teese Picture Wah, Fulltone Clyde deluxe and a few others are in the choices out there. I know it's subjective, but with a 335 and a Therapy for clean, Monza for dirty two amp setup, what would you recommend? What do you like about the wah you've got, and is there any other choices that I'm missing? I watched a bunch of clips today, and one that sounded really nice is the Electro Harmonix wah, the one that uses sensors instead of a pot. But people said that the thing would not stay put onstage, and moves about. But that one had some very good tone, if that helps to describe what I'm looking for. I may or may not need to get a great fuzz tone to mate up with it...thanks for your thoughts!

Have you looked at the AMT Japanese Girl Wah ? It's small and has 3 different sweeps.
You're on a roll lately. Like Steam Engine building speed !! Your Therapy/Monza set prolly sounds sweeeeeet.

The only one I can report on is the Clyde Deluxe, which I own. I really like it. I tend to use the "wacked" setting more than the other two, but they are really 3 distinct sounds. It has a nice sweep, and easy on/off stomp operation, which I've always found to be a problem with Crybabys. I'm not a huge wah guy, but when I want to get funky, this certainly does the job for me.

I have a Crybaby on my pedalboard, but I just ordered a Vox 847 Classic to use when I don't want to drag the board around. I will let you know how it works out

I like the Crybaby 535Q. It has two knobs to control all the parameters of the sweep and intensity of the effect, as well as an adjustable footswitchable boost. Not flashy, but effective.

I love my picture wah and my Vox 486 HW. Both cover lots of ground. The picture wah is louder and bigger sounding than the Vox.
Cannot go wrong with either one.

^^ +1 on the Teese picture wah. I've owned a bunch and this is the one I still have.

I'm still liking my Perfect 10. It's close to the picture wah but sounds a little more old school to me.

Funny, I have now at home the 4 last wahs which have been mentioned here: RMC Picture and Perfect 10, Vox V846HW and Xotic. No one could choose for you I guess: V846 is the absolute classic wah tone. The Picture has more balls and bass, while the Perfect 10 has a clear voice with full bass and a really fast sweep which can simulate "White Room" stuff. And the Xotic is cute, light and white... and it can do really well what the other 3 are able to do.

I always adjust the sweep of my crybaby when I get one to my liking. All it takes is a Phillips head screwdriver and an ear. I wanted the japanese girl wah bc it may fit on my pt mini but I don't want to spend $125 on another wah.

Went out and tried a bunch today, and I ended up with the Fulltone Clyde deluxe. Great sounding wah. I pulled a little candy apple red Tele off the wall to try them with and when I finished I looked at the price tag on the guitar. $349 used...a 2006 Mexican with a nice maple neck. It came home too!

Sounds like a great day. Glad you found the wah and guitar that spoke to you.
Congrats!

Feb. 2015 issue of Guitar Player magazine has a shootout between Dunlop Clyde McCoy cry baby and Xotic Wah XW1. Both highly praised but different. Both received Editor's Pick.

I have a Teese picture wah, I love it. I just went and bought the newest Teese "perfect 10" but it didnt sound "perfect" to my ears, it was more bright and brittle sounding to me over the picture wah. I kept the Teese 10 for an hour and flipped it and am staying with my Picture wah, its the best Ive had so far

There's lots of good wahs out there. I've tried Crybabys and a few others and even had an original vintage McCoy for awhile, but since I got the Budda Wah about 12 years ago I stopped looking. Great vocal quality and has never let me down on literally hundreds of gigs.

I use a Bonamassa Cry Baby.....not because I sought it out, but because I got fatigued trying to figure out which of the 20 something I tried was best.... It was close enough and I was tired of jacking with 'em.
Doug "Thunderstruck" has the best ear and the most intense experience with wahs of anybody I know on this board.... maybe he'll chime in....

Thanks for the kind words Lee. I'm with you. Just try a few wahs and go with what ya' like. There are great recommendations in the thread. I've settled on a Dirty Boy Green Wah. It's awful expensive for what is a very basic circuit. I like it a lot though.

Anyone try a Wilson Wah? Looks like they have a bunch of models and they have adjustable sweeps. That's always been the deciding factor for me, the sweep. I gave up trying new models once I got my 535q because I can set the sweep how I please, but looks like Wilson has similar offerings.... Hmmmm

I've had my share of wahs, and ended up with a Vox Ri and swapped out the board with an Area 51 drop in.

I've got a teese RMC2 that is pretty darn good, but I would sure like to try one of the vox handwired wahs...

I've owned a bunch over the years. My favorite is the Fulltone Clyde Standard. Great tone and sweep with an adjustable tension.
I also like the Budda for tone, but the treadle is a bit loose and if you aggressively "rock", you can shut off the unit when not intending to.
I have the AMT Japanese Girl as well. Cool little wah that I use on a pedal train nano. In that context it is a good choice, but the pedal is so small, it doesn't inspire confidence while in use.
Never tried the Teese, but want to someday soon!

I tried a ton of 'em: Fulltone Clyde; Teese RMC3, -4, and -10; Area 51, and a few crybabys. I found the Fulltone quite exceptional on cleans (just OK with dirt), but the lack of lo-impedance output buffer was problematic with fuzz. The RMC4 was awesome on overdrive, and OK clean. Then I tried the Area 51, and it was 95% as good as the Clyde on cleans, and 95% as good as the RMC on overdrive--plus it has the lo-impedance output buffer.
So I've stuck with the Area 51 and am happy; I even tried the RMC10 (perfect 10) against it recently, but found that they're so close it's not worth a change. Plus, I was never sold on the slightly-odd RMC cases & such. The Area 51 is all that I could ask for in a wah, and nothing else. Plus--they're a local MI company! Gotta love that!

Just ordered the Teese picture wah after listening to a side-by-side demo of the picture and the perfect 10 done by Mike Hermanns. The picture was a little less harsh on the top end to my ear--more trumpet/vocal-like. I'm interested in the Xotic XW-1, all that tweakability looks tempting--though I think given my almost zero knowledge of and experience with wahs it might just confuse me.

Had the Teese Pic wah, it's a good one. I felt it was a little dark, sold it in a search for something else...it's all a blur. I'd like to try the Vox HW, but I'd be afraid I'd like it and I don't know if I could bring myself to spend 200.00 on a wah...again.

I'd love to try some of the Dunlop Crybabys. The Vox HW would be another to try. I have the fulltone. I have the Bonamassa wah. I had area 51 "fix" my favorite ever wah. I have the Chicago Iron para wah. I've tried several different teese wahs, including having one modded. Geoffrey is a great guy to deal with. They are all different in their own way.
There is a story about Hendrix having his tech bring him a wah before a gig. Jimi didn't like that particular one so he asked for another. This went on until the roadie ran out of new offerings, and Jimi still was not satisfied. The roadie took a chance and brought Jimi the first wah he had refused. Jimi gave it a listen and said it was perfect. The moral of the story is try as many as you can before buying. Keep the one(s) that nail the sound or feel you want. Try not to get caught up in GAS. I wish I could get my favorite wah working again. My current wah gets me closer to that sound then any others I've tried.

I played the perfect 10 for maybe an hour and flipped it, I didnt like it at all compared to the picture wah. the 10 was more harsh, not as smooth sounding and more brittle. The picture wah is very smooth, and warm, I like it a lot and im sure you will as well. Its not considered one of the best wahs built for nothing, its worth the money and hype

I have the Japanese Girl which is good for the small footprint but only sounds good but not stellar, imo. I've also recently started having problems with turning it off by accident when I'm rocking it. So I've been looking to replace it or get an alternative.
I had a Budda wah (the old purple casing) and loved it's smoothness (I hate when wahs get too harsh or push my clean tone into distorted territory) but I got convinced to get a mod on it that made it similar to an old Italian Vox. Which was a mistake because after it was really hard to keep my tone clean. Kinda the opposite of what I like.
Sooooo, after some research I just purchased an old Dearmond Weeper wah. It's big and clunky but from the clip I heard it sounds pretty amazing. It will arrive tomorrow so my fingers are crossed. I play in a funk band so I really just want a good retro Shaft-y vibe without too much high-end. I used to own Dearmond semi-hollow guitar (which I never should've sold) so I figured it was worth it to take a gamble on something vintage knowing that their stuff is usually pretty good quality.
Congrats on the Clyde. If I didn't go the route I chose, I probably would have gone with the Clyde.

Real happy with the Picture Wah--I still don't really know what to use it for, but it sounds great--smooth and throaty and very vocal, even with a LOT of dirt. Not a harsh sound in it, even at its brightest/thinnest. And the sweet spot is gorgeous--really musical.
