Ok, boys & girls.. Finally got around to doing a couple of clips today. Suddenly, it's the busiest time of year for me and I'm not able to spend much time on these. But I had a few minutes to kill today & figured I'd give these a test... First of all, this started out as an experiment to see if I can could tame the gain in my new MAZ38NR. It's quite a bit more aggressive than the reverb version I had before. Absolutely killer for overdriven tones. With 'buckers and a BB preamp, you can get some really convincing Marshall tones similar to an SRZ-65... I'm serious! But since I wanted to start experimenting with pulling the gain back a bit, I decided to try 5751's. This first clip is with 5751's in all three pre-amp spots. I'm going to gradually experiment with 5751's and 12AX7's until I find the "sweet spot." Obviously, with the 5751's in all three spots, the amp is a clean machine. For comparison, I hooked up the Ghia head as well and tried to match levels. Same cabinet, same guitar, different heads. The G&L Tribute is one I just got this week... An "eBay special," if you will. Got it for a 2nd Strat to use for banging around town, flying, etc. It needs some tweaking, but is going to be just fine for what I'm using it for. Not bad at all in it's stock form... So here are the clips (first two at the top)... See what you folks prefer. Just some pretty chordal noodling... Today was pretty gray & overcast, so it kind of matches the mood. ;D www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=465770P.S. Since I'm still tweaking the Legacy, it's not stable yet. I started having some intonations problems in the MAZ 38 clips, but you should still be able to get the idea.

Nice Clips Jayson, the two clean clips are REALLY close aren't they. I could only maybe pick a little more chime from the ghia and a little more "body" to the maz but that could be cerebral listening. By the way, love the BB into 66 clip too. Thinking of getting one of those bad boys while the dollar is good.

You can really hear the "Z" sound in there and I'm surprised at how close the clean sounds are to my Maz Jr. (with Svetlana 12AX7s). I guess it's true when they say all the amps are tuned differently yet still retain that unmistakable Z sound. Cool playing of course and as always. BTW, loved that blues jam with the Keeley DS-1 into the Maz Jr. Very tasty indeed.

Thinking of getting one of those bad boys while the dollar is good. Thanks fellas... Tas you hit the nail on the head. The Ghia has got a sweet response & "delicate" overall voicing. Responds similar, believe it or not, to a good Deluxe Reverb...but WAY more British. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd say it responds similar to a Deluxe, but the tonal signature is more like an AC15, if that makes sense. The MAZ38 is definitely "broader." Extended lows, super smooth. However, it's plenty touch sensitive as well. Not sure if I'll dig the 5751's in all three preamp spots live, but it did sound pretty nice recorded. Kind of reminded me of a modern AC30-type...Maybe even a DC-30. I'll be anxious to hear what it sounds like live with my new 2 12" cab that's on the way with Weber 1225's (one alnico, one ceramic.) The Ghia and 66 should match up nicely with that cab as well. Of course, in the 1 12", the alnico Blue Dog matches up great..Especially for the pretty, chimey clean tones. As for the PM I got about settings, here they are for the curious: Ghia- Volume 10:00, Tone 11:00 MAZ- Cut 10:00, Master 9:00, Bass 11:00, Mids 2:00, Treble 12:00, Volume 12:00 On both of those I had the guitar volume wide open, with the "treble" knob on 7 and the "bass" knob on 8. More to come soon... In fact, I've got a whole slew of new clips I'm working on for the Weber site. Some are me, and some are Don Dunlavey (who built my Strat & Tele.) He's got some cool amps with Webers I don't have... Like the 12A150, Michigan 15, 10A125, and others. As soon as I get the cab with 1225's, I'll do those too.

I cannot crank them up for full effect (SWMBO is sleeping nearby) but if you tortured me into picking one over the other, the Carmen Ghia clip has a little more what I call organic sound which I like.

Jayson Very nice as always! So tone is at 11:00 I keep it between 12:30- 3:00 for cleans - usually around 2:00. I guess I like a little fatter clean sound - perhaps the head and cab configuration has more bass response?

I guess I like a little fatter clean sound - perhaps the head and cab configuration has more bass response? Well, keep in mind that, when recording, you usually have to set the amp and/or guitar a little brighter than what you'd want live. I was trying to get really pretty, chimey clean tones and this is where it worked well. As far as the head & cab vs. the combo for bass response... I think in general you might be right. But it's subtle. Live, I usually run the tone at about 12-1:00 on the Ghia. And on the MAZ, the cut is about 9:00 as opposed to 10...

Well, after hearing that clip I definitley want a Ghia. Can you reccommed speakers for it. I was thinking about getting a 2x12 box from Avatar with the Vintage 30 and a G12h30. I just can't quite afford a Z Best. What do you think. I am not a gigging musician, just playing at home for now.

a single Celestion Blue with a Ghia is the most fun home wanking rig I have had.

a single Celestion Blue with a Ghia is the most fun home wanking rig I have had. That's what I need here for my studio - carry that thing down there one time and leave it there for life! Then I can leave all these big amps in the garage for the next gig. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Awesome playing and tone Jason . Gotta love that Ghia, I had no idea how awesome an amp it was until I got one. I will be most curious to see your review of the Weber 1225's alnico and ceramic. I am GASSIN for a G12M type speaker and the Weber's are in my cross hairs.
