Tonight I decided very last minute to fill in on guitar at church and even later that same minute I decided to test the no overdrive set up, push the amp and ride my guitars volume. The result was life changing (pedal related of course), I asked the sound guy what he thought sounded better in the mix, he said the first tone (amp) was way better than the other (pedal). It took a little bit to get used to maneuvering the knob to the right spot for a clean to dirty balance and so forth but once I got it, man, awesome! The other guitar player said I sounded huge tonight, across the board it was a success. I may have found my new (for now at least) way to play. It just sounds so freaking good and the drive was equally balanced across each pup unlike with my drives. Obviously the tone was different but way more balanced. Until tonight I never tried to get a usable drive out of the amp, I would just push it to see how far it would go. I'm going to commit and remove my drive for now.
Anyone else play like this? Im sure the answer is yes but let me know what your runnin'!

I still wish I could get away with this...our venues are too small for me to crank the amp to the point of sweetness...even with the brake lite...it's just not the same. I can't get a handle on the brake lite and amp settings.

I feel that. I have my volume maxed and my master at about 8. I have my cab boxed in araulex so the volume really isn't an issue. Also, I think the sound guy is really starting to appreciate the tones because with every set there's less emphasis on how loud it is and more on making it sound better. He got us new mics for the amps that just sound amazing and after last night, man, the tones! I took my Tim off my board, now my signal path is volume knob, Clyde Deluxe Wah, Aqua Puss, BluSky, Tuner to amp. I've taken the plunge, haha!!

I get to see Buddy Whittington all the time since I live in Texas and that is the way he does it. I usually set my MV at noon with two clicks on the Brake Lite and ride the volume knob. I have a Maz 18 NR and a Z-Verb. My pedalboard gets left at home most nights.

It's easier to do for the pedal minded if your guitar has two volume and tone pots. That way you can set up your guitar to be the "pedal" and just switch pickups. On a strat a fella could always get concentric volume/tone knobs if he liked the Amp only tone but didn't like the wait I've got to turn my knob for a sec to get the sound I want thing.
Us new schoolers didn't get taught that and so we've developed a need it now idea about clean to drive...if we were used to using our amp/guitar like you were more often, I'm sure it would even make us write songs with more space ... so we could use the guitar more.
It will create a patience and more relaxed feeling over time I think.
Have fun

Have fun It's interesting that you mention the patience aspect, the last song we played last night tagged the bridge quite a few times and built each time. Not using the pedal allowed me to bring the dirt in a little more each round, the song was Way way more dynamic that way. Actually enjoyed playing that way much better because it was like building anticipation in the song instead of just coming on full force and here I am. I was able to almost build tension into the music to where you knew it was going somewhere but you didn't know when it was going to come and then it at one point it was just was there, it was great.

I can't get a handle on the brake lite and amp settings. The other thing I noticed was a better balance of volume and clarity across my pickups, where normally I would have to tweak or just assign a drive per pup, this way lent to more of a balanced tone.

One of my favourite mics to use live is the Heil PR31BW. The AKG 535 is a nice condenser to use live as a second mic.

Interestingly enough, we robbed the over head mica from the drums out of necessity one Sunday. They're AKGC1000S', they sounded so clear that i rallied to keep them. I told everyone that Sunday was the best my guitar has ever sounded and they all agreed, the tone was full and balanced, clarity across all the notes and even the IEMs sounded amazing. It was a dramatic improvement.

Definitely works for me. I'v given up trying to find an overdrive pedal I like because none of them sound as good as just using the amp itself. And i'v had paisley drives, timmys, ocd's etc. It was like I lost a bit of tone everytime I stepped on them.Just use a fulltone fatboost for leads occasionally now but that doesn't alter the tone I find just pushes the amp a bit.

I'd have to agree. Even my timmy was getting stepped on less and less to the point that it doesn't even get plugged in anymore. I think if you can dig your amps fundamental drive tone, are capable of working your volume knob, and aren't volume constrained, then plug straight in and let it rip. Doesn't get any better to my ears.

My two main ODs were a Tim and a Timmy, still really like them both but the dynamics and feel I'm able to add without them is second to none.
