My cover band recently did some studio work. The studio engineer was not happy with my noisy set-up, a 32 year old Marshall head, bottom and pedal board, so I went out the trailer and pulled out the Z28 head and a 1X12 Z bottom loaded with a Greenback and played straight in with the only effect a Guyatone Micro Echo. I used either a Les Paul or a Telecaster. The cab was close-mic'd with a SM57 on the speaker, and some kind of ribbon mic off on a stand about 8 feet away. This was a one time through affair, so I apologize for the bloopers! www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=638732

Wow, very tight groove...covering anything Steely Dan intimidates most sane guitar players. I think the Z28/ Greenback combo is one of the top 5 offerings Z has put out, quite honesty. Sweet Tele tone, and nice touch!

Your tone on 'Roadhouse Blues' is killer! They're all great tunes, but you guys nailed that one. Great job.

Thanks for the nice compliments. The Z28 is a cool little amp that really kicks butt over a lot of different tones, and sounds good with single coils or humbuckers.

I agree the tone on "Roadhouse Blues" is great. I recently picked up a Z-28 and am still getting adjusted to it. Could you share your settings on that song if you remember please? Thanks

Thanks guys. I think I was pretty much at 3PM on all three knobs. I might have run the bass even to 4PM... the Tele can get a little lean sounding (don't all Tele's?), so I like to bump the bottom a bit and roll the tone knob back about 25%. The Les Paul tracks were mostly set at noon, with both pickups on, and once again a bit of tone rolloff on the bridge pup. One other note.. the Greenback is a 16Ohm'er, which more than likely cuts the efficiency a bit, and may even have an effect on the tone. I own 6 Greenbacks in various bottoms, but this one has the sweetest sound to my ears. I bought this head a few years ago from Tony King, the rhythm guitarist for Brooks and Dunn. It started life as a combo, but he converted it to a head and then sold it to get a Maz 38. This poor amp would probably rather have some country music pumping through it!

Hi I realise that your post was virtually a year ago but I only just heard it.
Real impressive playing from not only yourself but the whole band. Extremely tight and well played and recorded I liked Josie ... in fact I thought I was listening to The Dan it was that good. Roadhouse was very good but I especially like the guitar tone on Take me to the River .. I could hear a bit of Dave Grissom in the chord tones.
I had a Maz 18 Jnr until recently but sold it as I wasnt 100% happy and I am now thinking of a Z28 and 1x12 cab. Did you use that on Take Me to the River?
I would love to come and see you guys live but its a bit difficult as I live in Manchester England. Please email me if you get a moment as I would love your opinion on the Z28 and 1x12. denis.robinson7@ntlworld.com

Denis Yes, the Z28 and 1/12 cab were used exclusively with all studio work. I used the Tele on Take Me to the River. Thanks again for the kind words!

Nice job on Josie! You and the keys player do a great job of those tricky Steely Dan "superimposed chord" voicings. Sort of a Robben Ford-ish tone on the solo too. Very cool. I'm psyched because I'm borrowing my buddy's Z28 tonight and I'm going to use it at a gig this weekend. I hope my tone is as nice as yours.
