Count me in the "off" camp. In fact, one of the things that attracted me to the PRS 305 when I was looking for a strat was that it was guardless with the pickups set in the wood instead of a guard

Great thread Frank! And great debate..... I'm in the guard ON camp. A burst looks naked with out one to me. That said, I have one LP and it is on. However, I have one LP style guitar, and it is off! I had forgotten your 'burst Mark - yours is the other one (aside from Lee's) that I have long coveted. Mighty nice!!

Depends on guitar color for me if I want a guard or not.

I prefer a Les Paul with no pickguard. My LP and LP style guitars all came with no pickguard so that may be why I prefer it that way.

I don't have the pretty 'bursts, but I'm in the "on" camp.

It's on, right now on the the old gold top, but if I could get used to the naked look ( and I might ) it would come off. Not to open another can of worms in the discussion but I like how the added space below the high E string feels and yes even sounds better. if the guard comes off, so will the pointless toggle switch washer ( surprised Gibson didn't find a way to indicate what the middle position meant )!

And in the "guard off" corner, Mr. Clapton's successor in the Bluesbreakers Any similarity between PG's axe and the one in my avatar is purely intentional. I'll see yer Greenie and raise ya a Keef! Frank, Frank, Frank, Frank.....Frank.
There is no way in H, E Double Hockey Sticks you can raise a Greeny with a Keef.
Call?... MAYBE... But RAISE?... I don't think so.
What else ya got? Hmmm, that's a pretty nice watch you got there brother...
Now as for the question at hand: For the most part ON. Some look better to me PG off but for the most part, defiantly on.
So having said that, I think my '96 Classic Premium Plus falls into the rare category of "off"

I like it on goldtops, all else I prefer the unguarded look.
Playing feel, I can't say as it's been awhile since I played a guarded Lester.

Depends on the Lester. If it's a plain-top, goldtop or other solid color, I'd go with a guard. If it's a real fancy flame or quilt top, I'd go without. Here's my LaWonda:

On a highly flamed LP, I say show it off with no pickguard.
For gold tops, single colors, and plain tops the pickguard adds some flavor.
Gotta say though, at the end of the day it's like Scarlett Johansson as a blonde vs as a brunette. No complaints here. Haha.
Also- pickup covers on, that big fat chunk of pickup is sexy and you know it.

On, then off, on, off, and so it goes... Same with PU covers. I'm a moody guy.

On, unless you have a top you want to show off and you don't mind scaring the finish if you flatpick. By the way, I have a cream colored LP guard that is autographed on the underside by Les Paul himself but (sadly) no LP to put it on.

It's "on" for me, though to be honest if I had bought the guitar with it off, it would probably have stayed that way. Here it is, my '95 R7 goldtop, bought maybe fifteen years ago, not great photos but you get the idea.... The finish is still in great condition, though the nickel hardware has tarnished somewhat. Shows it's got a history!

On. I keep my picking hand sort of "open" with my pinky resting on the guitar, so I prefer the bit of elevation the guard offers. When I play an arch top Les Paul with no guard my hand feels like it's hanging out in mid air.
