As my avatar shows, off. Reason: the guitar came with the guard, but when I had Larry Corsa do his Peter Green-mod, he would have had to mess with the guard to get it to fit right. Didn't seem worth the bother. Fwiw, on my (sadly neglected and in need of work) '68 goldtop (with P90s), I do have the guard on.

Two guitars, three guards (and one of them's an original Blackguard)!

I'm kind of surprised by these responses. I figured most people would like no guard when I saw this but I stand corrected.
For me, no guard! It's not a look thing for me, it's just that it gets in my way. It's like those old Tele guards. I have a hard enough time getting my guitar to sound good without that crap in my way!

336 with guard 336 without and another gratuitous shot without guard and an old stomp rig here's a LP tribute I no longer own but with/without guard pics

No guard. Part of the reason I dig the PRS SC-245 (and other PRS single-cuts) That said, I'd still be happy if I had a good Gibson Les Paul - guard or no guard. cheers always, eh Joel

I lean without. I like seeing a nice finish and grain.

I guess the guard-on thing imbedded in my neurons started here:

And in the "guard off" corner, Mr. Clapton's successor in the Bluesbreakers Any similarity between PG's axe and the one in my avatar is purely intentional.

I like Les Pauls with the guard on. It just looks right to me. My Grosh Set Neck has no guard. That looks right to me too.

I had forgotten about "Greeny" without the pickguard and that would be my only exception to the rule pick-guard on! You can clearly see the carve on that picture of Greeny. As per doctorice any similarity in the carve was also purely intentional but pick-guard on!

Alan re the Corsa...... I can categorically state that it both plays and sounds better than it looks. In fact l have next week off work and my mission is to trade my R8(once l have relieved it of its Wolfetone Dr Vintage p/ups)for a maple neck 56 style Stratocaster. Have my eye on a nice custom shop relic!

Roscoenyc the amp is my bedroom one knob wonder. It started off as an epiphone junior head but has been fitted with a different circuit and handwired board. Just the transformers are stock epiphone. I saw the cabinet on ebay and its a handmade dovetail jointed maple with Oroko sides(like an african type mahogany)and very nicely built and tungoil finished based on a 1974x and dimensions. I had a custom gold plexi faceplate made for it and it houses a low res Heritage G12H30 and a marshall knob! Here,s a gut shot

The Corsa is very difficult to get an accurate picture of as the top flickers and changes with angle and light along with its colour but my original request was like the Skinnerburst colour. In fact from some angles the flame all but disappears. I have recently, now the finish is fully cured, given it a light polish which has removed the matt wood feel finish and imparted like a semi gloss smooth but old look to it. Here is a recent ,but sorry a phone camera picture, after I polished it. Also another +1 to me for "Guard On"

Great thread Frank! And great debate..... I'm in the guard ON camp. A burst looks naked with out one to me. That said, I have one LP and it is on. However, I have one LP style guitar, and it is off!
