It had gotten a bad noise, sort of a crackling undercurrent to the expected hiss that shows up at high volume. The crackling was there even at modest volume. The 12AT7 (reverb driver) was the culprit. I didn't have another around, so I used an AX7 in the troubleshooting.
A buddy of mine gave me an old Japanese Westinghouse AT7 -- thanks, Steve! It made a big difference. Dropped the overall noise floor a bit and seemed to add additional clarity.
Anyone else try an older/NOS tube in the 'verb circuit?

I've been using NOS JAN 12AT7 from Dougs for quite a while Mike , for that very reason.
