So I tried out some different picks, Dunlop Tortex TIII, Ultex Standard, and Gator Grips. I'm liking the Tortex TIII's the best. They're exactly like the Tortex Standard's just with the shape of the Jazz III's.

For me what works is a Dunlop Jazz III, but I have been looking further in this subject and I found some "boutique" picks, which are, unhappily more expensive. Some names are: Red Bear and Blue Chip. They have various shapes and sizes but I don't know if that's what you're looking to get.

Time to bring this thread back from the dead.
I was inspired to try a few new picks after looking through this thread. I picked up a few Jazz i picks, but the lack of a sharp point combined with the smaller size made them uncomfortable for me. For about the price of a new set of strings I got a dunlop Jazz iii variety pack. It did take a little getting used to, but I'm really liking them now. The ultex one is probably my favourite but I'd be happy using either the black or red versions as well. Just to confuse me even more, a local guitar shop owner (and Z owner but not dealer, which speaks volumes) gave me a few of the Planet Waves jazz style picks - nylpro and nylpro plus. I think I like them even better. The great thing is all of this experimentation has cost me about $6-7 and I swear I can pick more cleanly with the thicker, smaller picks than I could with the larger, thinner picks I've primarily been using for most of my playing 'career', although I still think I prefer the old-school variety with my acoustic. This old dog is still at least trying to learn some new tricks.

Bingo brudda...just tried some jazz tone 205's...I had to put away cause I was liking them too.One go to is all that's required for this ole kooter.
the ultex jazz III is an amazing lil fella and is my new go to...didn't like the nylon getting ratty...but I did find the eric Johnson's a great pick also...and I wont go anymore expensive with the others mentioned.not necessary.

I've tried others, but for me nothing suits me quite like the old trusty Dunlop Tortex. I like the 1.0 mm thickness (blue). Dunlop Tortex picks are what feel most comfortable and familiar to me. This is exactly what I use. The 1mm is the perfect thickness for me. The Tortex are also the only pick that I don't lose grip of once I start sweating. I think there are other pics out there that produce a better tone, but I gotta have a Tortex or I'm struggling to grip the pick the whole time. I know this is just my body chemistry, but these pics work great for me.

My new faves, but when all else fails, I'll always have my Tortex standards!

I like the translucent yellowish Amber Dunlop Ultex w the black rhino logo in 1.0 size. Ultex is my favourite since I first tried them, regardless of shape or thickness. I do like to mix things up a bit though and the harder nylon picks just take a little bit of the bite off the attack when I'm feeling like a smooth operator. That doesn't happen too often .

I've been using the V-Pick small Chick Pick, just ordered more been really diggin em. Some day I'll try out the V-Picks, but I lose picks when they're easy to see so I can't imagine how frustrated I'll be with ones that can disappear wherever they land. I like to buy picks in 6-packs (at a minimum) so I can lose a few without worrying. Funny how I've spend more time in the last year thinking about picks than in the last 30. I think I'll go down to the man cave and try out a few right now.

One of the biggest changes in my playing was due to pick change...I had used lighter pics and never paid that close of attention would buy picks in mixed lots....long story short, switched to the Fender mother of toilet seat mediums as they give a certain sound to the string/guitar, play 84 American Standard Deluxe Strat, stock. Gold lace sensors..I also have some dunlop approx same thickness but made out of different material, I never tracked the history of plectrums, or anything like that...used to make pics out of the plastic coffee can covers cut em out with a stanley knife....so please excuse terminology....the material is "dead" does not have the "snap" of the Fenders...don;t know what the name of it is but makes a noticeable difference out the amp...tends to make thinks warmer or less twang whatever...other than that I use my fingers or pick/fingers, use fingernail for pick whatever. That said the switch to the above mentioned pics and staying with just those has what I would nhave to say is a huge difference out the amp...nothing else changed just picks so I guess they are way more important that I used to think...now they are part of the "sound" ...not just picks....Beat Goes On.

They're exactly like the Tortex Standard's just with the shape of the Jazz III's. I'm not gonna' be much help. I'm stuck using Fender hard celluloid guitar picks. I like the highs I get out of the strings with it. Every other pick I try sounds muffled by comparison. YMMV.

If you like brighter sounds, there are other, brighter options, but it does sound like you've found something you like. If you're feeling adventurous (since they're so cheap) you might want to try ultex or tusq picks since I found both of them to be brighter than average - the tusq being the brightest. I gave up on them because I found them to wear out fairly quickly, but then that's also why I gave up on the standard celluloid picks. Ultex lasts a long time. I was experimenting again last night and honestly found a distinct difference between the Planet Waves Nylpro Plus picks and the other Dunlop Jazz iii picks in terms of how they worked for me. I was trying to play some faster stuff and for whatever reason the Planet Waves pick just worked better. I may have to pick up a bunch, which is too bad since I can't seem to find them in any of the local shops and I already have a boatload of picks.

Dunlop Jazz iii Eric Johnson is my favorite. Very similar to the regular red Jazz iii but I prefer the EJ for its grip and sound.

I will have to give them a try sometime too, but I just got my shipment of ultex Jazz III and red max grip Jazz III picks today. Who knows - maybe I'll pull out my dremel tool and do some experimental customizing - I have enough to spare now. Funny that I never really noticed much difference in sound between picks before I started playing Z amps. Go figure.

I got Vinni to make the last batch of Euros in a tinted polymer, rather than the clear.
Chick picks also come in white, if PANK ain't your thang.

The Johnson's are a different animal compared to the red jazz III's...I found brighter open tone...I liked them but edges got ratty after some use.
The jazz III's I liked the size...a shade smaller than ultex III and Johnson's...again bright with a little bit of drag noise...
The ultex III's for me were the clear winners at being a neutral tone, no noise.Virtually indestructible...Kind of wish they made them in the jazz III red/black size...that would be perfect size...Yet to try chik pic though.
