Popped back to the top after five years... check the end of the thread for the update... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well I suppose I've wanked too much here - you all probably think that's all I do. Well, you're pretty much right, but I suppose as long as I can get away with it I'll keep doing it... But this time I glommed a backing track (thanks for the links JChance!) so I could demonstrate the beans in this 6545! And this thing has some real beans to demonstrate! I'm thinking when I gig with my cover band I won't need the Flexi at all - only need the Flexi on the blues band! Check it out: Money For Nothing

That amp is fantastic. WOW. It sings... I love the sustain, the harmonics, the note definition, everything.
Best srz 65 clip I have heard. Karma coming.
Was that the set neck or the PRS?

That was my Grosh Strat! It does have a humbucker in the bridge position though - a custom wound DiMarzio that Grosh had wound to match up better with the two Fralin Blues in that guitar. Thanks for your comments!

Phat tone Steve! Great playing. D@mn it all, I am going to have to own a Z-28, Delta88, Route66, and now a SRZ-65/6545. Have some Karma for the wicked playing my friend.

Thanks arun! I gotta say, I was worried that the SRZ-65 side of this amp would suffer for being in a channel switcher, but I haven't had the gain knob dimed yet, so I am pleased that it's going to work perfectly for what I have in mind. Plenty of spare gain to be had on this rig. I've had a load of channel switchers and I was pretty set against them until this amp. Now I'm set against all of them EXCEPT this amp! ;D

Great playing & tone Steve! Thanks prowler. I'm anxiously awaiting some tube purchases so I can do a bit of fiddling there. I think it sounds pretty good as is, but what if it could be better?

Great playing Steve and that amp wow. You've got me thinkin', dabnabbit. Just that amp with some good pedals like your BB for the clean 45 side or someting for low gain would cover any territory I can think of.
How loud were you playing when you recorded? Attenuated? SM57? Karma comin'.

SM57? Karma comin'. Thanks Gary! Here's the setup: Grosh Bent Top Custom > Compulator > Dr. Z 6545 > Airbrake [-6db] > Rivera 4x10 Cab [Fender DeVille Speakers]. Amp was set for SRZ-65 side with bass dimed, middle dimed, treble @ 2 o'clock, master at noon, gain at 3 o'clock. I mic'd it with a Rode NT1 about a foot in front of the cab. That was plugged in to my Alesis Studio 32 mixer running into a Layla recording system in my PC. I used Vegas Audio for the multi-tracking, and Sound Forge to add a bit of reverb to the recorded guitar track (too much if you ask me, but it didn't sound like too much on the studio monitors!). I generally prefer an SM57 but both of mine are wrapped up in my gear and I was too lazy to go fetch one from the garage... Oh, and Gary, I was playing pretty freaking loud! That amp has plenty of beans! Even at -8db on the Airbrake the elements in my computer monitor are shaking so bad the display is going nuts when I hit low notes. Probably I shouldn't play that loud near the hard disk drives in that computer... ACK!

Here's a clue - it helps if you're fingerpicking it. I don't want to spoil your fun, but if you set up like this you'll have the starting position: 1st finger on 4th string 5th fret; 3rd finger on 3rd string 7th fret; and 4th finger on 2nd string 8th fret. You will also be fretting with your 2nd finger on the 2nd string 6th fret.

Steve- Great playing, I think you nailed it. Very few guitarist do MFN Justis. Do you think you'll be able to crank the 6545 loud enough in small venues to get the same feel that you just recorded. Thanks for the fingering tips. +1

Thanks for the fingering tips. +1 RC, the 6545 is a 50 watt amp (+/- a few watts) so I don't expect any problems being loud enough - actually I'm sure someone will tell me to turn down! But more to your question - the recording was done with the master volume at noon and the Airbrake on -8 db, so it wasn't really very loud in the studio. So yes, it should always sound like that. The more I play with that amp the more I appreciate some of its abilities.

I thought Z said the 6545 was a 65 w head. I could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere before.

I've looked all over the place and there just doesn't seem to be any statement one way or the other on any "official" web page.... I suppose I could put my 8 ohm Hot Plate on there, stick a signal generator in the front and measure it, but that's a bit of bother - suffice it to say, this thing is plenty loud.

The KT-45 page on the Z web site says it is 45W. I don't know if that helps, other than it is safe to say it is at least 45.

I'd say it is at least 45W and probably no more than 60 - I don't know of ANY EL-34 based amps that are developing 60 or more watts - I think in Class A/B those tubes are 25 watt tubes, max...

The EL34's that are used in the 6545 & the SRZ-65 are capable of putting out 30w each. So at most the 6545/SRZ-65 would be a 60w amp. 50 watts is a more reasonable assumption however.

Great Tone! I have been considering the 6545 for some time now and I think I am now sold being a huge MK fan!
Hello from Seattle...is that the used 6545 that Jay had down at Emerald a while back? I thought about buying it but it looks like you beat me to it!
How do you think the 6545 would do with a Z 2x10 cab?

I thought about buying it but it looks like you beat me to it! How do you think the 6545 would do with a Z 2x10 cab? Hello from Renton - yeah, this is the 6545 that was on ECG web page. I traded my Mazerati for it. Liked the Mazerati, but it was giving me hernias! See the 6545 forum for my first play report for the 6545 - it rocked the world! As far as the 2x10 cab goes, all I can say is the recording you just commented on was done with a 4x10, so you have some minimal idea that 10's can sound great. I played it through my THD 2x12 last weekend and it was great through that too. I have a feeling the Z 2x10 would sound killer, but I can't say from experience, so maybe someone else can chime in on that one.
