I just uploaded some video files and an audio file playing my Maz. One is a Jazz standard (Black Orpheus), playing my archtop; something most wouldn't associate with a Dr.Z. The other video is an original written over a funky 12 bar blues backing I did in "The Jammer". Here I'm playing a strat. The audio file is my take on a backing track I got on thegearpage.com called smooth blues. I'm playing my PRS here into a bad monkey. It's a real fusion style but really contrasts with the other files soundwise as well. Forgive the flubs. These are me just having fun. Here's the URL: www.putfile.com/garyhartlinHope you enjoy.

Thanks very much you guys. I'm starting my diet tomorrow so I'll have to redo those videos in a couple of months. Amazing what quitting smoking did for my waistline (made my hair grey too). BTW, I posted the clips on another forum and a guitar player who represents another line of boutique amplifiers (demos them at NAMM, etc.) had to know: "What is that amp?" I think he was intrigued with the sound using my Yamaha archtop. Zs rule!

GARY!! Smokin!! WOW! Funny, I just caught onto these...I've been wanting a Jazz box for quite some time. I'm debating between a Joe Pass (Epi) and a Sheraton II (Epi). I think the Sheraton will be well suited for both Blues and Jazz. Very cool stuff.

Gee thanks guys. Lefty, I played a Joe Pass the other day at a local music store through a Polytone.....nice guitar except that they had a set of .009s on it. The Sheraton would be more versatile though and not feed back. I get upset sometimes when I'd like to get the volume up a bit with my Yamaha but........what can ya' do? It's always a compromise.

I used to play blues a lot and for a while I was using archtops, ES-175s, L-5, EPi Triumph with a De Armond. I got good at clamping my right hand right on the strings. It worked well but that's the only way to do it. What was funny was I also used a thin ES-125TDC and it fed back much worse that the bigger guitars. I always though it was because it had a higher reonant frquency and was more easily excited by the vibes in the room. The L-5 was easiest to use but the '51 Epi Triumph ($189 in a pawn shop with the original brown case!!) with the DeArmond sounded the coolest.

Gary, I clicked on the link in your sig from another post but I thought I'd better find this thread and bring it back up top. Great playing! You know...Ive never been much of a jazz fan, it didnt "make sense" to me...I like the way you mix it up and play stuff that "makes sense" right along with the stuff that "doesnt make sense"...a little Redneck analogy there A little karma for the guy up north!

Love that post , Gary. Great playing, and I like the fusion stuff (in moderation) Here's a clip of a great fusion player and friend from Vancouver, Simon Jarratt. You might want to check him out if he comes to HFX. He'll chat all day about amps. simon sez

No. He builds his own, now. I posted this just to show off another cool canadian player ;D, and his playing reminds me a bit of yours.
His amps do sound similar to the maz series, I find. He uses 4 El84's for most of them Great guy and very friendly.
Sent you some karma for the great post.

Karma back atcha. He actually does remind me of me on a really good day. He's more polished, though. I don't get the time to stay in great shape anymore. I'm always a little (or a lot) rusty and can get pretty sloppy. The sound also did sound like my Maz. You have good ears and thanks for the kind comments.

Thanks Ronnie: I just saw your post now, don't know how I missed it. My mixed style has come about naturally, I think. I always studied and practiced jazz but there's pretty well no where to play it here so I always played top 40 rock or country or old rock with some blues. I always tried to slip in things I was working on though and over time things kind of blended with each other. Anyway, thanks for your kind words.

Gary, Great job, great tone, and great playing too. Is the bad monkey pedal a digitech? Many thanks! Rick

Gary, Great job, great tone, and great playing too. Is the bad monkey pedal a digitech? Many thanks! Rick Thanks Rick: Yeah, it's a Digitech; a great pedal and a steal at about $40 U.S., a fairly well-known sleeper. Just ask countryshawn. It's been replaced on my board though by an HBE power screamer which can get that sound but also so much more gain and options.
