So, I have 3 amps. a Ghia, a Route 66, (both heads) and a Swart AST (1x12 combo). I run both the Ghia and 66 (and sometimes the Swart!) through a 1x12 cabinet that currently houses a G12M Creamback. The Swart has a Mojotone Greenback clone in it. I don't gig a ton, but do a fair amount of recording in the basement. I'm looking for something that might have a bit of a different flavor for recording. Something that would sound good with all 3 amps. I'd be open to another 1x12 with a different speaker. Or a 2x10. I'm intrigued by the idea of a 4x10 but concede that I really don't need something that big/loud.
Anyone have any thoughts on what configuration and speakers might be a good idea? Less efficient speakers are fine by me.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Adam

I've always felt like a 1x12 and a 2x10 together is hard to beat since the combination can sound pretty beefy (with the right speakers), plus, a 2x10 is a lot easier to hump than a 2x12 or 4x10, and they sound good on their own if you want to go that way.

They're not less efficient, but I'm thinking a Vintage 30 or a G12H30. Both are very different than the greenback.
The V30 has a signature upper mid honk in tone. The G12H30 has big bass, scooped mids and crispy high end. (I don't like it for gigging, but for recording, it could be pretty good.)

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I should clarify that I'm planning on keeping the Creamback 1x12, and adding another cabinet, whether that be a 1x12, or a 2x10, or whatever. Probably not interested in a 2x12/4x12. I think I'm leaning towards a 2x10, maybe with alnico speakers for a bit of sparkle, or possibly 2 different 10s for recording variation. Its unlikely (although not completely out of the question) that I would play through both cabs at once.

I think a 2x10 with G10 Greenbacks would be pretty sweet alongside a 1x12 Creamback. That would be nice--and I think the 10" Greenbacks would pair nicely with both the Ghia and the 66.

I think a mismatched 2x10 or 2x12 would be the ticket. You'd have options to suite the song / guitar / amp / mood / etc.
Don't rule out a 2x12. If you're not gigging / lugging it, then it's a great option. Particularly when you can mic both speakers and blend them.

I'm sort of thinking about something non-Greenback, as the Creamback and the Mojo 12s I have are very Greenback-y. Thinking maybe alnico, or an alnico/ceramic mix? I dunno, though - I could potentially be convinced. What are the Z 10s like? Does anyone know what they are based on?

What are the Z 10s like? Does anyone know what they are based on? I seem to recall Ted Weber saying long ago that the Doc's 10's were loosely based on the Vintage 10 speaker, but built by Eminence, and then customized with a different dustcap (or perhaps different dustcaps according to the application?). I have nothing to base this on as fact, but I seem to remember reading such from Mr. Weber.

1x12 w/Celestion Gold. For recording run it added to your existing 1x12. Mic them both and mix to taste. If you are mainly recording then you don't really need a 2x10. Just 1x10 would be fine and cheaper. Thousands of tracks have been recorded with Fender Princeton Reverbs. Doc's 10's have become my favorite in that size speaker.

Jensen spkrs have a tweed tone to my ears and the eminence is the F sound of the past 30 yrs. A blue may give you the difference in timbre you're seeking but they're only $30 cheaped than a Gold. You could get a WGS alnico and ceramic for less than the gold and probably pair them up in a 2/10 or 2/12.

Update - I decided to go with a 2x10. The cabinet (JDesigns) is being made, and should be here by the end of the month. I managed to get a Weber Blue Pup and Silver Ten from a forumite to fill the cab. Looking forward to having a different sound in the arsenal!

Hope so! That will give me 4 speakers (the aforementioned 10s, a 12" Creamback, and a Mojotone 12" Greenback clone) to run any of my amps through. So hopefully, some good variations for recording. At least, that's the idea.
I's be lying if I wasn't interested in running my Ghia through both cabs at once, though. I wonder if Todd @ PCNS can make a cable for that?
