If only they weren't Epiphones.
Kind of makes those 2012s with the "layered" fretboards look more attractive, doesn't it?

I don't know. Maybe. I like those guitars and all. Heck I LOVE old Hamers. And the Collings I've tried were second to none. But they're not Les Pauls. There's still a shallow part of me that wants a GIBSON Les Paul. Of course now it's gonna have to be a used one and Gibson won't be getting any of my money. I'd love to have a nice chambered R7 Goldtop--but I won't be paying $5k or whatever for a new one. Jefferson makes a good point--if it wasn't for Gibson's crazy pricing and iffy QC, there might not be a niche for the PRS's and Collingses of the world (I was around and in the industry when Paul Reed Smith was just starting out, but that's another story). Gibson taught people that set-neck guitars should be expensive--and they left room at their price point for competitors to come in with an arguably better product. This also happened in the mid-70s. Back then Gibbys poor QC and increasing prices launched many brands….Hamer, Dean, Ibanez, etc. I have a recent LP Standard and the quality is very good IMO, but the prices are pushing these further from working musicians.

As I posted yesterday on this subject on another thread....... "Well, I guess that settles it for me - no more Gibson guitars coming into my life! Looks to me like Henry is shoring up the defences against the imminent demise of GC.............. unsettling times for the Big Two it seems......... time for me to move on....... but talk about squeezing the LIFE out of "brand value" A run-of-the-mill, Les Paul Standard of dubious build quality, with some electronic gizmo attached, for $3,879!! Is he MAD?? So, who else is making guitars out there these days, without ripping the customer off? And making them properly......... now where're did I leave the Collings, Grosh, PRS, Probett, King Bee, Revelator etc. etc. catalogues then?? Have to tell you, that PRS S2 Mira I played yesterday was in a different league from the same priced "cheapo" SG - it was in a different league from the expensive SG Standard I played, at twice the price! Paul Reed Smith must be rubbing his hands with glee at this news..........." I also just ordered my PRS S2 Mira from John at Peach........ and when I have the readies for "Les Paul", I'll be ordering a PRS SC245 from John too, more than likely!! This sort of makes me mad, yet gives me a huge sense of relief at the same time - I have NEVER been a fan of PRS (too many "bling necklaces" for my taste, and yet, now that I pay closer attention, Paul has got some REAL gems in his range (S2, SC to name but two.......). My worry is he sees this as an opportunity to do the same thing and make a "cartel move" to join Henry in the Idiots Corner........

I am with those who are glad that we already have our Les Pauls or other Gibsons so we don't have to worry how they price their new guitars. I got my 2000 LP for a great price and it is all I will ever need to get a LP sound.

If all of this comes to fruition, I don't see how Gibson will be able to compete with its own Custom Shop. I'm not rich, but I think I could scrounge up the difference and buy an R8 over a new standard. Provided that the custom shop doesn't jack up its prices as well.

Gibson price increases haven't bothered me since 1979.

Gibson price increases haven't bothered me since 1979. Nicely said...... and when I think about it, they've never bothered me as I only have one Gibson, bought second hand for a song 2 years ago!

They all have that zero fret jazz on them. I think it looks bad aesthetically but my opinion doesn't matter to Henry.

Gibson price increases ... it helped me make a recent purchase from PRS and may yet still inspire me to get up and get one (or two ) more guitars back into the rotation cheers always, Joel

I spied a 2015 Les Paul Junior for $899.00. Pretty sure it had a satin finish.
Oh but the good news is for $899.00 you get a hard shell case with it .....
All I can say is WOW that is a lot of change for a single pickup mahogany guitar.

For the record, a 2014 SG Standard price increased 21% from 2013.
Just installed a min etune system on a Les Paul Jr Special and it works quite well.

I belive that people like Bill Collings, Don Grosh, etc. are just smiling a bigger smile... I don't know. Maybe. I like those guitars and all. Heck I LOVE old Hamers. Of course now it's gonna have to be a used one and Gibson won't be getting any of my money. dont get me wrong, I too LOOOOVE high end Gibsons as much as the next guy and there IS something magical about that name on the headstock. However, i think that when you couple higher prices for a lesser product that at a point you have to say that makers like Collings and others are in the process of replacing Gibson as the pre-eminent set neck guitar builders in the world. Seems like Brad Whitford, Audley Freed, Charlie Sexton and Zac Brown might agree that the Gibson name isnt worth the trade offs in quality, playability and price.

lol...actually, you started your thread a day after Stan started his. But Pete's is MASSIVE! Correct!! I would not want to take ANYTHING away from Pete's massiveness!! I think these price increases and changes are ridiculous as everyone else. I do have a Les Paul and love it. But as far as anything new, I'll stick with Collings. Not cheap, but through the roof consistent quality.
