I have had such a struggle selling my 1965 Twin Reverb that I have started looking at other options to move it. Such a shame. It is all original and in really fine shape w/ NOS tubes. OK, the speakers are re-issues. The market for these is really down.
Anyway, I have an opportunity to trade it for a 1979 vintage Orange Hustler 1x12 combo and some cash. This is the rare 50 watt version. I used to have a vintage 120 watt Orange head (one of the Graphic ones) and it was a great rock amp. I liked it much better than a Marshall Plexi. I haven't had an EL34 amp in a while so this might be interesting. The old Orange amps sound quite different to me than the new ones. Anyone have any experience with this particular model?

Not a bit. But sounds like great option in a tough market. If you like it then may be worth it.

Well I made the trade. The amp turned out to be quite interesting and different sounding than anything else I have, which is what I was after. It's very well made. 15-ply wood cabinet. The circuitry is a little more robust than Marshalls of the same era I've seen. It has a WGS alnico Blackhawk HP which is supposed to be comparable to a Celestion Gold, except it is a 100 watt speaker. Definitely not a high-gain amp but not really clean like a Fender either. Sort of like a Hiwatt.
Something else interesting is that it was purchased in Leicester, GB from 'The Sound Pad'. I have to wonder how it got to Kansas City. Any British forum members remember that store? Is it still in business?.

While Twins are cool an old Orange, if you are into the Orange sound, is hard to beat. I would have done the trade.

While Twins are cool an old Orange, if you are into the Orange sound, is hard to beat. I would have done the trade. Yeah, I have 6L6, 6V6, EL84, and even 7591 amps. I was kinda looking for something different. Strange but this has a mid-shift control; somewhat like an old Ampeg. In one position (with the tone controls all at 12:00) it sounds really close to my MAZ Jr NR, although considerably louder and stiffer (ss rectifier).

Had a couple Ampeg VT40's (too heavy to move around - back is not something to mess with) and they can get a wide variety of sounds. Can mimic a lot of different amps, if they don't rely on too much Output Transformer grind as the Ampeg doesn't do that.

^^^I still miss my VT22 combo, but there is no way I could lug that around these days - plus what would I do with the extra power? Re the Orange amps, I saw Wishbone Ash back in the 70's and they all were using Orange half stacks - they sounded killer. I didn't have anyone in my area that carried them though so I've never played one. It sounds like you got the better end of the trade zpilot.
