While the verb works on the EZG so I assume nothing is wrong with the amp itself, it maxes out at a significantly less than "surf" level. This is a perfect range for most of my playing but when I want to ride the waves, it doesn't take me to the beach like my Z-verb used to at noon and noon. Now that I have sold the Z-verb, I'm looking for that extra wet **** Dale \ Ventures level of reverb and it doesn't seem to be there. As I know the verb circuit works, I'm thinking that it might be a weak or out of spec tube (I bought the head used and have not pulled them yet). The Z web site lists the tube lineup but not the functions. I assume that the reverb driver tube should be the ax7 V3? (maybe the culprit?) and the return should be the at7 V4?. I did look through the posts in the EZG section and I saw that folks had some problems with the verb circuit, but not this particular problem. Maybe I just got spoiled by the Z-verb but I suspect that the EZG is supposed to get wetter than mine currently does. Thanks in advance for any advice or information.

FWIW , on both my Maz 18 and Maz 8 I got the reverb to push a little better by using an NOS JAN 12AT7 and a Sovtek 12AX7WC. Depending on how the circuit is designed , many rely on the current that the AT7 puts out , not so much the gain. A lot of new AT7's are just weak AX7's relabeled. And a 12AX7 puts out less current than a 12AT7 by design.I used the Sovtek in the recovery position because it's quiet and has good output. Hope this helps.

BritInvasion,
That does help. EUREKA!! I just found this non-reverb related 2008 post by Myles. Looks like I need to focus on V2 and V3 for my issue. Thanks to both BritInvasion and Myles.
A balanced tube will have no ill effects in a first gain stage ... the two sides of the dual triode have different functions and there is no plus or minus in a front gain stage.
A phase inverter has MUCH more impact on clean headroom than the output tubes as long as the output tubes are close to design spec and performance. A weak phase inverter can cause all sorts of havoc and one with a lot of gain will make the amp have less clean headroom and be more agressive at lower settings which is something some folks like a lot.
V1 is everything in this amp. V2 is reverb as is V3 for the most part with a bit of recovery in there too and V4 is the phase inverter. There is a lot of variability in 12AT7s made today and 90% of them are junk but the Doc uses NOS 12AT7s which is pretty darn cool.

FWIW, I just popped in a couple of NOS Mullard CV4024's (12AT7's) and it sorted mine out very nicely...

Were you having the same issue? It really is plenty of reverb for normal use, I'm just dipping my toe in the surf and want that drippy level of reverb to be available. Thanks brayks.

My issue was really more some noise and micro-phonics. I couldn't get much 'verb before all the dogs in the neighborhood were makin' a terrible racket!

After swapping out tubes with no effect, I finally took the reverb tank out of the head and removed\reinstalled the cables and internal connections. It turns out that was the problem. I had previously pulled and replugged the reverb cables from the head but didn't go into the bag. Nothing was obviously loose but I guess those connections are pretty sensitive to signal loss. Time for some Pipeline.
