Hi all,
I recently bought a used MAZ 38 Senior combo (1x12). It's a 20th anniversary edition - at least, so it says on the badge in the bottom-right corner. Sadly, the amp was having some trouble, after I bought it. There was a coming and going of "static" (crackle, pop...) when the amp was turned ON and out of stand-by, even though I was able to play it just fine. Even with the Volume and Master turned down, the static came and went. Sounded like a volume pot that has collected a lot of dust - and then you turn it and hear some crackle.. if that makes sense. First thing I did was change all the tubes, but that did not solve the issue.
Today, I took my amp to a local tech. Turned it on and he looked a bit surprised - worked on a couple of Zs and this seemed out of place. He knocked on the top of the amp a couple of times and then the amp when silent. No more sound. It turned on (tubes seem fine), but there's no sound. My tech is going to have a look at it, but I am a bit worried.
Any thoughts?
kind regards, Robert

Welcome to the Forum Robert - a lot of good people and information here. Here is a link to Doc's trouble shooting site. drzamps.com/trouble_shooting.html You might want to try this before going to the tech. Remember, just because you bought new tubes doesn't mean they are good tubes. What happens if you put the old tubes back in - still no sound? I'd try some of the basic things - check to make sure all tubes are seated well. You might want to try Deoxit on inputs. Spray a little on a plug and work it in and out a bit. Did you also change rectifier tube? This sounds suspiciously like a rectifier problem to me.

Also make sure the classy bolts are tight. They are the shiny ones on the top. Good luck and please let us know what the problem was.
Welcome to Z Talk.

Thank you guys for the replies. Dr Z was kind enough to shoot me an email, stating I should have my tech check the fuses, EL84s and rectifier tube. One of the tubes may have caused the HT fuse to blow, hence no sound. Will report back!

Where else are you gonna get the owner/designer/builder to give you suggestions on how to fix an amp - that's why you'll love this place!

I already love this place.. Reporting back: my MAZ is back and good as new! Cause of the problem: 2 worn-out EL84 tube sockets. Seems one of them shorted and caused the fuse to blow. My tech put in new sockets and checked the rest of the amp, just to be sure. Everything else is in perfect working order. Problem solved! Thank you guys (and the Doc!) for the quick and helpful replies! Now, back to my guitar...
