I just got a NOS brimar 12ax7 today and put it in my mini z head, and all I have to say is HOLY CRAP!! This thing kicks arse! Wow oh wowy, the tone! Sooo much warmth, articulation and goodness. This is my first experience with NOS tubes, but I have spent a decent amount of time messing around with current production 12ax7's over the past few years. I have to say that this NOS brimar just seems like a whole new animal compared to the JJ's and EH's that I have grown accustomed to. I had no idea that NOS could do this! In a way kinda depresses me though, because I have to think that great tubes like this are at a limited supply, and my not be around for my whole life. I was wondering what does the future of 12ax7's look like? Will I be able to expect good tubes like this brimar 10-20 years from now? I hope that is the case because this tube makes me ;D

Hey Paolot, nice to hear that you like the Brimar 12AX7 in your Mini. I have the same tube laying around at home. Waiting for the Mini Z to plug this tube in. Do you still use the GT EL 84 or have you tried other power tubes? Is the Mini Z unattenuated still too loud at home? Does the sound change by using the in built attenuator? Enjoy your Mini, Willi.

Hey wilhelm. I do use the Gt el84 S that came with the amp, and it sounds good. I will probably stick with this tube because I just don't have the money to spend on a NOS el84, plus I have heard that the current production el84s are pretty darn good anyways.
The amp with no attenuation is quite loud. I am running it through an open back 1x12 with a g12h30. I usually use some attenuation, like the first or 2nd setting when my roommates are in the house, or if it is later at night I'll attenuate it more.
I think the amp sounds really good with the attenuator, especially on the first two settings. With the attenuator all the way up though, I think there is a little added compression, at least to my ears. It's not really bad, just a little different sounding then the amp with no attenuation. If I dime the amp to super gain levels, I actually like the added compression from the attenuator.
All in all I think the mini is an awesome amp, and it was the perfect buy for me (a college guy), for great tone, good versatility, and volume friendliness.Hope that helps!

Paolot, thanks for the helpful report. As usual I can´t wait to get the Mini but I have the GT and that´s an awesome amp. I want the Mini for home practice and hope it to be a bit similar than the GT. The GT can be used for home practice too but I have to play in the bedroom level. In our practice room I can go to click 4 on the airbrake and that´s where the goodies come out the amp. For the EL 84´s. GT´s are nice tubes. EH´s are nice tubes too but a tad warmer. I like both.
