Disclaimer: As most of you know I don't gig (yet) and I am a bedroom player. I have gained much of what i know (all 5 chords) all on my own with the help of you tube. I don't have experienced with many amps. I come from Peavey amps (classic 50 and 6505+) Line 6 amps and a Marshall JCM 900. I have played other peoples fenders as well. When I went the Boutique handwired direction I went with DR Z and have have a bit of expernece with a Maz 38, RT66, Monza, Z 28, CG, EZG, SRZ65 and Remedy. I still have the Z28 and the EZG just sold the Rem to justify the purchase of the Therapy as I can't keep both ($$$) otherwise it was a keeper.
I don't know what else I can say that Pete, JAG and PCNS haven't said already. WOW, you sure get your dose of "T" (for Testosterone) with this amp. Mine is #12
I tried different settings, guitars and speakers.
Guitars:
Gibson LP with stock hum PU
Fender American standard strat stock PU
Mex FSR TELE stock PU
Gretch Semi hollow Stock PU
All guitars sounded so nice and warm. I have never experienced the GV manipulation as I have with this amp. From mean to clean with the GV turn or with the PU selector (more noticeble with the LP) Just like the video Pete posted of Page but my fingers are not as good:(
The only amp that comes close to that is the Z28. In fact there is no denial these 2 amps share DNA with a twist of REM in there.
The cleans are clear an nice, different than the EZG cleans but very nice and articulate as well. The drive is up there, not as driven as the Rem but more defined and articulate. it presents clear and distinct drive.
Although I own a few pedals I am really not a pedal guy so this amp is really up my alley but I tried it with the EP booster with the EP set at 9 o'clock....all it did was add a nice a clear accent without any hint of muffled or deaded sound it just added a "POW" and punch element to the sound...think EQ bypass sorta thing. I also had it plugged in to my tonebone ABY switcher that has a mid boost and it just played so well together at +5db and +10db then I swith to the gain side of the ABY and it was just melting the walls with this amp.
Settings were similar to Pete's although I had to keep the master at 9 O'clock with the occasional bump to Noon (Double wow)
With the Z best cab it sounded good but there was a bit of a high end harshness, I lowered the GV just a bit and took the T knob down a bit and it tamed it...you can hear mids real nice
2x10 with Doc speakers: holy cow, I loved it now I am thinking 4x10 $$$$$$$$$$$
2- 1x12 gold had them already set up for 2x12 with a trusty PCNS Y cable so I gave it a go...man, hard to chose between the 2x10 and the golds 12....I think I may give the golds the edge for sure.........so articulate, clear and powerful punch
marshall 4x12 with 12T-75 not sure on these yet but definetaly not as good as the Gold or 2x10 or the Z best (12h30 and V30)
it was only good with OD tones and even so....well, not as good as the other speakers.
Now, for me, the best part of this amp was the dynamics. Coupled with GV and Guitar tone knobs the way the amp responds to Pick attack and right hand dynamics is like no other amp I have played (remember my limited exposure) the only other amp that comes close for me is the Z28 and this amps just does it better....that simple.
I love the big bottles of this amp. The drive is more of what I think as a clasic rock drive mixed with a bit of modern drive with harmonically rich overdrive and tones. At least for me I think of bands like Maiden, Saxon, Iced Earth,Thin Lizzy and such. high gain but not like Pantera, Children of Bodom, slayer although I believe you can achive them tones as well. I did a little of Joan Jett tunes ("You Drive Me Wild")and although I am not as good as the queen of tight power chord rythm I believe it sounded fantastic.
The amp responds to you and puts out what you give it from soft, clean, driven to plain dirty. I understand I am in the honeymoon phase but if I had to choose an amp for desert island situation I would insist it would have to be the Z28, the EZG and the "T" If I had to swim to the desert island I would try to muscle all 3 amps. If my life or fam life depended on it well all 3 amps can sink and I would place a new order with Riot guitars once rescued from the island . Once rescued and only had enough $$$ for one amp it would probably be the "T"
Sorry for the rant and jumping allover the place. I had to work last night and I am on conferance calls today and getting ready for upcoming night work. The good thing is that I got to stay home today, work from home and receive my dose of T.
