The Doc sez...
"So a 5U4 can be safely used in any Z-Amp. Just remember it will lower plate voltage so on FIXED biased Z-Amps Bias will need to be re-adjusted.
The 5U4GB sounds best in a 6L6/KT 66 amp IMHO, not so good in a EL-34/EL-84 based amp, but YMMV."
Can anyone tell me the difference in tone between these two in an EL84 amp? I've got a Mazerati and I just switched them out...I guess the GB sounds bassier. Does any one have any recommendations for NOS Rectifiers EL84 amps? Thanks

The 5U4 will give you less wattage than the stock 5AR4/GZ34, it will be a bit more spongy. I would stick with the stock GZ34 and go NOS at that. For a good NOS one go to www.kcanostubes.com

i had some rectifier issues with my stock tume and went with a NOS GZ34 (sold as a phillips/mullard) in my Rx. all i can say is just do it. do not let cost stop you just do it. you will not be disappointed. smoother tone, more open, responded better to tone control nuance.
I also have NOS phillips miniwatte el84s in mine. sweet and smooth but i need a reliable source (one set i got was total junk) or a modern alternative. NOS is cool

Just a personal choice for me, but i find EL84's already have so much inherant compression or squishy-ness, that i like the firmer the better, rectification. I usually run the power section about wide open, and the sag from going to a 5u4 would be too much for my tastes. In fact i really like SS rectified EL84 amps! Just my taste i guess.

Personal taste .... well, Michael Burks has a SS rectifier in his MAZ 38 and his tone is pretty spectacular.

I got a NOS 5U4GB and put it in my Mazerati and It definately gave me more mids and compression but it was nearly too dark sounding. I broke up sooner and had less opness to my tone. After putting the stock Sovtek 5A4 in there, the amp opened up and had a nice chimey tone. Not too bright after I put a Mullard 12AX7 in P1 and a gainy Groove Tube 12AX7 in P2. It really turned the amp into a rocker. Super responsiveand organic. I love this thing through my ZBest w/ Wber P12Z's (AlNiCo Silver Bells). I hope that helps others. Thanks for all your advice.
Any recommendations on affodable NOS 5A4's?
