Thinking of making some changes on my board. I keep swapping out a crowther hotcake and a analogman silvermod TS9 back and forth. Im thinking of dumping both and getting a Ibanez ts808 handwired. anybody here using one or have heard one? whats your opinion on them? kinda pricey but Im willing to buy one if it will do what im looking for which is give me a warmer blues tone with out such a mid hump and Id like it to be pretty transparent as well. from the video clips ive seen, they look to be a pretty good pedal. knowing how well Z amps take pedals this should be a decent one for blues/rock?

hello, I have used the 808hw, I feel it does still have a mid hump to it. It is very transparent lacking in the low end so it didn't beat out my Paisley Drive. It is a great overdrive just not enough gain for what I needed it for.

I've tried just about all the TS type drives out there, including the 808HW, and I think my Paisley Drive is the best of the lot. I don't normally have it on the board but when I need that TS thing the PD is the deal for me.

I like the Fulltone PlimSoul. Not really a TS circuit, but I like what it does. Never really bonded with TS's except for a Soundtank TS5. Just a cheep plastic version that I liked. I tried a lot of others - Ibanez and Maxon - but didn't like them as much. The PlumSoul thickens up my guitar the way the TS5 did. I could probably do the same with my Diamond J-Drive MK-III, but I use it for a different sound...

I picked up a Monte Allums mod TS9, my first actual TS pedal. I have many other iterations, but not the actual pedal until recently.
This is a very useable pedal, I think the "presence" switch makes all the difference.

I have the 808HW as well as an AMan 808 and a real-deal early 80s one. They all have the famous mid hump and bass cut, but to me, that's one of the reasons they are great on stage.
The HW is an excellent addition to the venerable 808 platform….maybe a bit more refined tonally (kinda hard to explain)…..but still very much a TS.

I have a keeley mod 808. Used it for years great pedal for what it does. Funny how people buy 808's and complain about the mid hump.
Not currently on the board but it makes an appearance from time to time. Sounds great with a Tim/Timmy or flying dragon in front of it!

The TS is a classic because of how it EQ's your tone. I think it's silly to choose to use that circuit and then try to engineer that mid hump out of it. Kind of like buying a Marshall Plexi and then moding it to sound like a Twin Reverb.

I wasnt sure if the 808 had as much of a pronounced mid hump as a TS9 did. Id like a fat screamer type sound WITHOUT the mid hump. how about a phantom overdrive?

No worries, was not refering to your specifically. Just see it pop up all over the place. Not sure on the 808 vs. TS9, have not owned a TS9.

I can't comment about the TS9 either.......never owned one (or the Phantom).
Check out Analogman for TS mods the smooth out the mid bump. I think his "silver" mod does just that.

It's impossible to say which of the originals have more hump because due to the tolerances of the components no two of the same model are exactly alike. Part of the mod that AnalogMan and Keeley does is to use more precise components in the critical places. I'll bet the 808HW is the same.
Also, we all perceive things differently. To me the mid-hump IS what makes a TS sound fat.

I have a analogman silvermod TS9 now, and it still has that middy sound Im not to fond of, its better than stock, but maybe what Im looking for is more smoothness and should try an 808? I know the silver mod is supposed to be equivalent to an 808 but maybe an actual 808 might be exactly what Im looking for ?

I wish I could say definitively one way or the other. My AM 808 has the True Vintage mod, so it's supposed to be the same sound as my original, which I can report that it pretty much is if you twiddle with the settings on each. Mid bump is definitely there. Not sure how going from the 9 to the 808 would be.

Ive considered that as well. Are they as good as the hype? Still on the fence with mine. I got on the list because I was not going to pay more for it. I also pulled it off the board and put the 808 back on to A/B. After the A/B I definitely would not pay more than what he sells them for. What helped me with the mid of both pedals is running a boost in front. A good clean boost like the flying dragon (my fav) and/or a timmy. I am sure that there are others that work just fine but those are what I have.

OP. Sounds like you are looking for a Mad Professor Little Green Wonder. It's a tube screamer with less of a mid hump, more low end, more transparent and open sound. It's described as the tube screamer for those who don't like tube screamers. It's worth a shot.

Add me to the Paisley Drive users, you can switch between 3 different EQ curves all very musical. I also use a cheap Biyang Mad Driver (a factory modded TS Clone) for my TS duties.

Another to consider: The Keeley modded Boss Blues Driver.
I own and/or have owned several overdrives/distortions/fuzzes over the years. If you are trying to go for a sound without the mid-hump, you should definitely try a different style pedal.
I bought the Keeley modded Blues Driver when it was on sale at a local shop - I LOVE this pedal. It is essentially like turning up your amp; transparent gain/grit/etc with your guitar's tone shining through.
I currently have it along with an OCD (at 18volts) on my board.

So I took a chance and bought the TS808 hand Wired. It came in today and I actually really like it. It sounds great with my Maz Jr, not a real noticeable mid hump, very smooth and nice. I tried it with my EZG50 and that's when I noticed the more pronounced mids in the pedal. I think it sounds great with the Maz and just so so with the EZG. In my opinion it will stay on the board as the Maz is my main amp and I actually like it better than the EZG 50. The EZG hardly ever gets played. The Maz is incredible and I love it, it takes any pedal Ive put with it so far

Awesome! I loved that match up too. It was not a HW but was a keeley mod. Still have it and I agree, great with some and so-so with others.

Maxon's 808 and the OD-9 are both very good. I'm also using a Chicago Stompworks 808 clone.
