The Strymon Flint is great, and you can get vibe sounds as well, but it is pricey.
A Boss TR-2 is probably fine for most situations.

The Eventide Space has an amazing tremolo on the spring reverb patch. If you don't mind paying $500 it would be a good option.

As maxwell said earlier, the Boss TR-2 is a fine pedal and would likely be good for gigging (where you're maybe not 110% overly-obsessive about the fine details of the trem's "tone"). I had a Keeley-modified version with an extra volume control and it was very useful. Now using a Fulltone Supa Trem and it's also very nice... sounds fantastic.

Another vote for the Boss.
I got one for $50 off Reverb.com.
I also use the Voodoo Labs 4 knob one because it can boost the signal.
I'd still love to try the Flint or another one that does the Brown circuit sound.
But honestly the Boss is more then fine.

Really enjoy my Fulltone Supa Trem. I actually is a pedal that will make your bypass sound good. Have had a Vibro-King, Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverbs ( yeah 2 of 'em), Vibrolux Reverb as a reference.

Check one of these out...
Yes, these sound extremely impressive (and the graphics are very cool), but the SupaTrem for me nails the tweak/tone compromise in such a very convincing way that I've now been using the same pedal for a decade. It's big though...but what if it were stereo? Oh, the new one is? Cue arrival of large yellow box on pedalboard...

I have a Supa Trem and it is very tremmy. I had a Diamond Tremolo and it was amazing, but I wanted something simpler. The other guitarist in the band has a Flint and it sounds fantastic. He often runs it in stero with a couple Pro Juniors. Sounds pretty sweet and throbby. I'd probably buy one, but I fear we'd be treading in the same soundscape. Love the brownface Trem/verb!

Buy a cheap Boss TR-2 and get it modded. I got mine for $45 and the mod cost $45 I believe. Really great pedal.

Just went back to my Demeter from the supa-trem. Supa-trem is nice but a little too big for me right now. I would like to try a flint, two in one is appealing.

I have a Sugar Baby, that preceded the Bayou trem. The only difference is that the level control is on the outside now. Cool pedal, it's been on my band board since I put it together.
Another nice trem that's a bit more involved is the Dr Scientist Tremolessence.

Thanks for all of the input guys... After doing a ton of reading, I figured out that what I really wanted was a standard blackface deluxe like trem. Sure, a Gibson, brown face or valco trem would be cool, but comes with much added complexity and at a pretty high price. I could not find a used one for less than $80, so a new one shipped at 99 was a logical (warranty) choice. My understanding is that Boss has dealt with the volume drop in the new one, I need a buffered pedal at that spot in my signal chain, and I can do the higher fidelity/true bypass mods myself with a $28 kit.

Hi Mark, Was there anything that you didn't like about the Keeley modded TR-2, leading to the Supa Trem replacing it? I have other Keeley modded (and Keeley original) pedals and and am typically blown away by them; I was wondering if the Keeley TR-2 might be worth picking up due to the added functionality of the boost. Back to topic: I spent some time recently on the Strymon Flint - Awesome pedal! and although it is a bit pricey ($300), you get three excellent reverbs to go along with the 3 excellent trems; the '63 being absolutely fantastic. It would be my suggestion to smolder as it provides both reverb and trem for the Z-28. I have a SamAmp 25, which is an incredible amp, but it too lacks verb/trem and I am thinking of going this route. Scott

I have the small pas through Mr Springgy that they only made for a short time, but if the TR-2 doesn't do it I'll likely go in that direction. Thnx!

Hi Mark, Was there anything that you didn't like about the Keeley modded TR-2, leading to the Supa Trem replacing it? In retrospect.. no, not really. Modded TR-2 is great. At some point I kinda got on this kick of going all true-bypass (while still using a high-quality buffered signal, mind you) so I departed from many (but not all) Keeley-modded Bosses. The Supa Trem has an extra "fast/slow" switch that is pretty cool, but you don't necessarily get to pick which two speeds--it's not like two separate presets, but rather just 1/2 & full speed of what the knob is set at. But then, the TR-2 allows you to really fine-tune the "shape" of the trem, whereas the Fulltone just does "hard" (square-wave) or "soft" (sine wave). It's a toss-up, but if given the choice again I'd probably still take the Fulltone for its on-the-fly footswitchable speeds.

In a different direction.
I recently got a Catalinbread Pareidolia Harmonic Mesmerizer.
Does the Brown era trem/vibe thing. I like it a lot and it's an interesting alternative to a more standard trem.

Update:
I ended up going with the Flint - AND THE EL CAP! - Couldn't help myself LOL
The sounds were haunting me, so I broke down and bought the two Strymons along with a new pedalboard and pedal power 2+ as my old board/supply were so old that they couldn't handle the power requirements nor under board mounting!
Bottom line: I love these pedals!
I have only used them at one gig thus far, but have been noodling at home and am blown away by the sound quality and versatility.
