As I've started gathering a small collection of tubes I'm thinking it might be convenient to mark them in some cases. Is there any problem with making identifying marks on a tube with a sharpie?
I know GT does this with their power tubes, but it's on an area that's already painted with what I would assume is some kind of special paint.

No problem at all. I do it all the time when working on customers amps so tubes can go back in the same position if they're not being changed.

A sharpie works great and there are also pens in various colors available in electronics stores for marking components that work nicely.

Which kind smells the best??? ;D I like the markers that actually write sort of a liquid metal in silver or gold. It is more permanent and smells like the stuff my friends in the sixties use to use on old socks to get high.

Do you mark the bottle or the base?
I also thought I read somewhere that you want to keep finger oils off the glass; fact or fiction?

Do you mark the bottle or the base? Either is apparently fine. Fiction.
