I'm looking to completely retube my Hotrod Deluxe and to put a new speaker in it. I've already got the speaker picked out...and maybe a few of the tubes. My thoughts are a pair of Svetlana 6l6's and Tungsol 12ax7's. Will this work? And are there any suggestions on what the best sounding tubes would be to put in?
Thanks, Taylor

That's a good place to start. Preamp tubes are really a matter of taste. I've used the Svet (Winged C) 6L6's for a couple of years now in my Hot Rod Deville 4x10 that I leave and use at church, and I think they're the best sounding new production 6L6 on the market. I love'em Harold

I recently upgraded a friends HR Deluxe with the following: V1: GT12AX7M; V2 and V3: TAD 7025 high-grade; 6L6's:TAD 6L6WGC-STR Tube- Matched These are the short bottle size. They almost have an EL-34 sound to them. They give the amp a great flavor. And of course, a ceramic Weber 12F150, 50 Watt 8 ohm speaker with beam blocker. The amp sounds so much better! I totally agree with hdahs143 about the winged C 6L6's. I will be putting a set of the TAD's in my black face DR. Good luck, Rick

You should've told 'em to ditch the HR and buy a Z! That's what I did (I have a HR Deville 410).

Rick this is interesting to hear about the small bottle TAD 6L6s in HRD. in one of my amps, the TAD tubes sound quite nice with good treble extension, strong bass and even midrange. in other words, nothing like what one would expect from EL34s. this certainly goes to show how various tubes sound differently depending on the circuit they are used in.

skydog958, I didn't want to make him feel bad. If he played through my Maz senior he would have been shattered. Rick

I'd love a Z and I'm working for it...but I figured retubing the old tweed bastard is the most reasonable and affordable way to get a little bit better tone while I'm paying car insurance right now...but we'll see.

The Winged C Svets are really nice tubes in the HRD.
