New member here and happy new Z owner! Just scored a 2006 Z28 (Q serial number) blonde combo with a greenback speaker locally at a really good price. Amp is not in perfect cosmetic condition (tolex just starting to separate near face plate, couple scuffs), but it sounds like a dream!! At $700, I can't argue.
I'm a fender amp guy at heart and have been patiently waiting for a Z28 to pop up for a long time now. This thing does not disappoint! Totally in the honeymoon phase, but enjoying it immensely! Can't wait to get home from work and really kick the tires on this thing!

That's great! Welcome aboard! Most of my amp experience is with Fender, and I am blown away by what I hear coming from my amp. At $700??? Seems like you stole that one my friend.

Welcome to the forum and again, congrats on a wonderful tone machine. With the money you saved, and the amp appearing "used" pretty good, I would check out all of the tubes in it. It will definitely sound even better if you have too many miles on the existing ones.

Thanks guys. Yeah the amp has been well loved but that doesn't bother me much. It still sounds great! And I absolutely intend to use the money I saved and invest in new tubes and a day at the amp spa (tech). May get a quote on repairing the tolex too but I don't think it'd be a difficult job at all.

While were on the subject, where is your favorite source and what is your favorite tube compliment for the Z28? Probably looking at an entirely new set :-)

Welcome, awesome find for that price too. Blond Z-28 was my first Z as well but the head version. Still my favorite Z!

Thanks Steve. Out of curiosity, which brand of tubes come stock with a brand new Z28? And has anyone tried something different with better results?

Well Pete. That's a great idea. I hadn't thought of that. I really just assumed they stuck to building new amps instead of servicing existing ones. I'm sure shipping would be a massive pain though.

Go with the best you can afford. I have a set of NOS greyplate 6V6s in mine, NOS ef86, and current production 12ax7 and GZ34. I've picked them all up along the way. Either have a qualified tech or yourself do a proper bias job so the amp cooks the way the good Doc intended. Welcome to the forum and the brotherhood of Z. The '28's a beast with a soft side and she's capable of just about everything you can think of save metal (although with the proper stomp it is possible just not my cup of joe). Pics of the amp or it's a figment of our imagination.

Give them a call and talk it through - I'm in the UK, so don't have that option (although my UK dealer and tech shops are superb!), I have spoken to Z folks a few times and often the Doc himself will answer the phone. I'm sure they will give you top notch advice.

She does exist! I'm thrilled. Called a local tech and I really don't think it needs to be sent back to Z. Nothing that can't be handled locally. Just going to run a diagnostic on the tubes, replace if needed, adjust bias, and reglue the tolex at the edges. But in order to do that I have to part with it temporarily. That's gonna be a problem for me. It'll have to wait for a bit!

Update
A quick rub down of the tolex with a magic eraser did wonders for the cosmetics of the amp. The resulting water was far from clear so I think it'd been a while since it's past rub down. I couldn't resist the urge to plug in on my lunch break. It sounds incredible and very loud. Thank god the wife wasn't home :-). It sounded great with a 72 thinline tele, a "regular" tele, and a Strat, but the thinline may have been my favorite combo. It absolutely rips!!
Obviously, the amp is great sonically, but I do think it needs to go to a tech to get loved on for a bit because I don't think it's had that kind of attention for a while. I'm sure it'll sound even better after a tune up.
