I see that GT and KCA both have SS Rectifiers you can use in place of a tube rectifier. However, it has been suggested to me that I NOT use a SS rectifier in my MAz due to higher voltages and that tube life would be shortened considerably.
What about the Weber Copper Cap? Is it "unsafe" to use? According the Webers description, his cap emulates the sag of a tube rectifier.
I have pretty much decided against using a SS rectifier but if Webers design is superior/safer than the other SS offerings, I'd like to have one as a backup...just in case.

The Weber is a cool deal. I think the 5AR4 in the MAZ is the way to go as you have plenty of plate voltage and a very fast rise time. I see no reason to stray from the Doc's design in this amp. .... especially in a cathode biased amp.
Now if we were talking Delta 88, KT-45, or 6545 I might try a SS unit but not something that tries to simulate something else. I'd have a simple tube rectifier and a simple plug in solid state unit and swap as I needed to after biasing the amp for the solid state unit.

This is a real neophyte question. Are phase inverter tubes & recectifier tubes the same? Thanks. Luke

This is a real neophyte question. Are phase inverter tubes & recectifier tubes the same? Thanks. Luke No...I dont have the technical explanation but the Phase Inverter is the small tube closest to the power tubes. The rectifier is a larger tube...on my Maz it is kinda behind everything else...not in line with the other tubes so to speak.

This is a real neophyte question. Are phase inverter tubes & recectifier tubes the same? Thanks. Luke Luke, No. The rectifier converts AC to DC and is part of the power supply of the amp. The phase inverter, sometimes called the phase splitter or "driver" is generally a tube like a 12AX7 or 12AT7, 5751 or 12AU7 at times too. This is generally the last tube in the front end chain and is the one that drives the output tubes. Some feel the phase inverter has nothing to do with "tone". This cannot be farther from the truth. When you hear an output section distort, in many cases you are hearing the phase inverter break down and it's distortion characteristics via the output tubes. You can have high drive phase inverters ... generally long plates looking at today's tubes .... or wimpy output ones such as a 12AX7EH or Ei 7025 (even though the Ei has long plates). In some cases this can be just what you are seeking. In any case, the PI (phase inverter) is a hard worked tube in the amp that can provide a good degree of tuning an amp for a particular use. In most Z amp that use a 12AX7 phase inverter I prefer the 12AX7R2 (Sovtek 12AX7LPS) or the GT 12AX7M.
