Hey guys, I tried a Monza 1x10" combo about three years ago and ended up selling it due to too much volume. Didn't have the MV mod yet. I had a Brakelite but it seemed that to get a reasonable volume with a good amount of distortion that the distortion tone was too heavily saturated and squashed for my tastes especially with the Brakelite at 2-3 clicks. Also, I didn't feel like I got enough bottom and oomph out of the 10" speaker. I've been trying to get a specific hard rock tone out of my Maz Jr and can't quite nail it.
This is the holy grail of tone that I've been after in my head: (especially the Les Paul Jr. at :55 and even the Tele at 1:28)
To me that is the greatest tone ever!! My early Monza above did not sound like this. This is much tighter and crisper. My question: Does the MV Monza 1x12 really sound just like Dave Baker's clip above. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Is there anywhere you can try one? I have the mv version but it has the 110 red fang. Which 10 in speaker did you have? I think the red fang has plenty of bottom end with a 10 in speaker, it will rumble everything in my basement and is, as you say, crisp. But that is my ears. I did get one of Todd's pcns y cables so i can run an extra 112 cab with it, but i have only done so twice. I do think that video is the tone of the monza, but dave is a pretty good player too.

I bought one with the MV mod, and with the MV out of the circuit (turned up all the way) (ala: like the original version) the amp was not nearly as useful....fun but a bit over the top.... You need to try the MV model...

I had the Red Fang in my non-MV Monza, but I'm a 12" speaker guy. Monza was cool but it was so loud it wasn't usable, especially on stage at church. I'm not afraid of some gain, my memory of it has slipped but I think it was too saturated too. Dave's tone above is crunchy and perfect with the MV. I kept my Maz at the time because of the MV but I just can't get the humbucker hi-gain tone I'm after out of the Maz. I've been scouring the forums for a used Monza 1x12, I'd even take a non-MV and send it in for the mod. I just can't afford to buy new and take a resale hit if it's not what I'm after.

I just bought a Monza 112 MV combo this weekend with a G12H30 and it sounds simply incredible. You can get tons of punch, sparkle and all out roar from her even at bedroom volumes. Such a simple set of controls and yet they work so well together. You cant get a pristine clean tone but with the volume turned fairy low, the drive up around 2/3 and the master to taste, you can have a very nice almost clean tone with a tone of overtones and "sparkle" for lack of a better word in the mix. Just a fantastic amp.

...My early Monza above did not sound like this. This is much tighter and crisper. My question: Does the MV Monza 1x12 really sound just like Dave Baker's clip above. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Sounds like your Monza was a 1×10, which probably had the Eminence Red Fang 10 speaker in it. Dave's amp in this video is a 1×12 with a Celestion G12H 30th Anniversary speaker. In my experience, those speakers are quite far apart sonically. But if I were to close my eyes & listen to the YouTube clip at the 0:55 mark, I'd say "yup, a G12H-30 speaker sounds just like that." And for the record, I have played an earlier non-master-volume 1×12 Monza. It sounded awesome—but it's so loud it's downright unusable for me, which is why I didn't buy it. I have the 1×10 combo now (with Red Fang 10) and it's a barrel of fun; I still might swap out the speaker and try other 10's, though. Hope to try the G10 Greenback soon.

Went from a Maz 18 nr and now I've been using a newer version Monza w/ master vol since July 2013. I was debating 10" or 12" but decided on the G12H30 and can't believe how big this amp sounds. I've used it in Small venues and large venues and never felt I needed more of anything. Outside I'll add a 2 x 12 with Vintage 30's along with the G12H30. Totally happy with it. Usually run the Vol at 12 oclock, Drive at 3 oclock, start with the tone around noon and adjust from there and master around 12 oclock or less, whatever works for the room. Usaully dial back on the guitars volume to clean it up if not enough just kick the drive down a bit. Using a Fulltone Fat Boost for solos. Playing mostly classic/hard rock type material and some originals. Using A Les Paul Classic, a LP Custom and LP Jr also a Tele and ES 335 once in a while. Still have the Maz 18 nr head but the Monza is more me.

Billyzbee, That really describes what I'm after! I just can't coax the gain I need out of my Maz Jr NR without it compressing too much with pedals in the front(and I've tried them all). The Maz actually does the higher gain really well with single coils or P90's, there is just something I can't bond with with buckers and I play my SG or LP 90% of the time. Now the trick is to find a used Monza out there!

Yes!! After all your wise urging, I scored a mint used Monza today. It's the non-MV early version in a red head, but I got a pretty good deal. I'm going to try and set up an appointment as we speak for the MV mod with the Doc. If I like it, I'm going to transfer it from the head shell to a 1x12" combo.
