Hi,
Yes it's my first post since joining in '07. Holy lurker!
I think I might finally have a worthy topic of discussion... Dave Bakers tone settings! (And other treble anomolies)
I have and love my SRZ65 with Z-Best cab and before purchasing watched the Dr. Z SRZ demo with Dave Baker auditioning the 3 common axes of choice several (!) times. Am I seeing the bass, middle, presence and gain in various 11:00-1:00 positions and the treble at 7:00? This would make sense as I can almost exactly emulate his LP junior riffs with my Collings 290 w/no pedals, gain up and treble WAY down.
Taming the treble in this beast has been a much talked about subject and I'm wondering if the high, sometimes spiky treble is stemming from the Vintage 30 in the Z-Best cab?
BTW- tried 2 Philips NOS 5751 in first gain & PI position and the cleans were very sweet running treble at 9-10:00. Actually could find an unusable setting. Will try 12AY7 in first position one day.

I have found that if you invest in a Few NOS 12AX7's or in mine a 7025 RCA in V1, it will Tame some of what I call FizzYness. The El34's you may be running also can be a Factor, I switched to KT77's and Never have Looked Back, I run my TReble on about 100-200Oclock, and use the fine tuning with the Presence control However Im not a Fan of the V30 Yes it could be that if not Broken in, The best V30 I have heard is the Mojotone V30 which has pre rola Doping standard, Hope this Helps,

A 100pF Silver Mica cap across the Plates of the Phase Inverter. You can contact Don at: repairs@drzamps.com he can send you a pic if your uncertain about installation. This will roll of some high end.

Wow! Now that's service! Thanks Z, I will contact Don.
I noticed a rebias to 34mA helped a bit. I've always been a G12H guy and considered replacing the V30 in the Z-Best Cab but don't want to loose the percusive crunch that sets the cab apart from the others.
the KT77's are on my list as are the Winged C Svets. JJ's in there now. Still very usable crunch and clean right out of the box.

Here's my follow up.
Tried the the SED winged =C= el34. I love this tube in other amps. Not in the SRZ, I didn't feel it was rock & roll enough (I use them in my SET audio reference amp and THD Univalve) nice in a pinch but prefer the JJ for SRZ.
Swapped out ECC83 and PI 12AX7's for Phillips 5751's. Basically like rolling back the gain. BUT GE 5751 in the first stage was nice. Mellowing and taming of highs. Very usable gain right around the dial.
Didn't hear back from Don but opened up the SRZ65 to find (what I'm presuming is) a 120pF across the PI. Didn't touch it, didn't need to.
*Really comes down to the pickups. Lollar P-90 is a dynamic pickup and the SRZ is a dynamic amp. Rolling back the treble and presence is all thats required to tame the p-90 as is rolling back the mid for my PRS & rolling back the bass for my Tele. That's why the knobs are there.

I switched to kt77s in my 6545. Fizzyness is GONE.

Mine is stocked with JJ's all around. 803s's in the preamp and PI. This one is my second SZR. Sold my LE a couple years ago, now have a 2010 that has a 9001 tranny or something or other. The LE had an 8001. I like this one so much better for some reason. I always found that at low volume settings it sounds harsher, but once you pass by 10 O'clock on the volume dial (no matter where the gain is set) the harshness goes away. Probably because you reach closer to the point of where the amp is supposed to be running. The dynamics change and the speakers can then work. The tone changes all for the better. BTW: I prefer the Treble under 9 O'Clock or off most times, with the Presence at noon. The Mid is full on. Ever try turning the Volume all the way and using the gain knob as the volume? Incredible cleans to dirty cleans at band volumes too.
