So I just picked up a used Z best with the V30/H30 mix. I'm thinking of pulling them and trying to trade/sell them off for a set of greenbacks
Although I've heard the V30/H30 mix and know it sounds good I also know it is LOUD! The greenbacks and 65s have a character that I really dig though. In any case I'm going to try the Rt. 66 with it before making up my mind. I'm also going to use a 50 watt 2204 with it occassionally.
In any case I'd you Z best vets to weigh in and tell me your thoughts on a set of greenbacks....shoot or any other speakers I might consider. I'm not married to Celestions either.
I don't think I'm going to go with Alnicos because they seem like they'd be really bright, and there's the clang to them that I'm afraid would wear on me. Keep in mind though I've only heard them live twice.

Believe me - the Z-best is going to sound great as-is. I'd play it like that awhile and let the speakers get broken-in before deciding. However, a Greenback/H30 came in mine and it sounds wonderful!

I've got some Scumback 55hz and 75hz greeny's on the way. Should have them in a Z-Best cab in a couple weeks, I'll let ya know what I think.

It depends on the Alnico speaker. I've got a Celestion Blue that's bright and a Tubby that's not. I actually run them in the same cab and love it.

I second the motion to try it like it is for at least a short time before you switch.......Sterling

At Zfest, we played practically every Z thru a ZBest. It was loaded with the V30/G12H30 combination. The sound coming out of that cabinet was simply amazing as anyone who attended can attest to.
"Chime" in guys and gal!

"Chime" in guys and gal! mos' def' a big ol' +1 on that Don. I still use that sound as the benchmark for perfection ;D 'course, if I could play worth nuts it might mean somethin' edit: never realized the spell checker would take out an entire swear word. at least it could have been a rhyming word. d'oh!

We both run strats with fralins, we both have a cab with a tone tubby and celestion blue. And, we both have the landgraff.

The Z-best cab is Thiele-ported right? If you change the speakers the cab wont perform as designed ( not the Greenbacks either ) - unless it's possible to re-tune the cab.
Better check that before you try to switch speakers in the cab.

The cab sounds fine with speaker swaps. It's tuned to 30 hertz, that's all. I've got a Emi Wizard and Swamp Thang in one of mine and it sounds amazing.

I never thought I say this but the Ghia can be very loud through the V30/G30 Z best. I played an outdoor gig with the Ghia/Zbest recently. Unmiked. Its a very giggable rig now whereas before the Ghia could not quite cut it at stage volume without being miked up. You can lose 3db by running greenbacks but that speaker combination is chosen for a reason - they just sound fantastic. I wouldn't rush to make a change. Get an airbrake instead!

Dang, thanks fellas!
Don't get me wrong I'm going to try it, but I like Greenbacks because of their lack of efficiency and that woody sound. Now I know the H30s do it...but they're so LOUD! lol Not that my halfstack is quiet or anything.....I'm just looking for some opinions.
