Hi,
I feel like changing things around. I want to know if a Celstion Gold 1-12 in open back would sound good W/Maz 18 ?

I sure liked it with the 112 prescription...Don't know about the JR though. 6strang

Hey!
I tried one last night!
The store had 1-12 open back cab, so I plugged into the Maz 18JR Reverb like I have.
What a wicked sound! different that the 2-10, more Vox like. If you EQ right, you can get Fender Deluxe reverb Alnico sound too!
I think I found what I was looking for!

Love the sweet sound of Gold. Another one for C-Gold.

Hey guys. How does the gold compare to the blue? I like the blue's highs and mids, but it sounds a bit lean in the low end for me. Also, it breaks up sooner than I like and has a flatulent bottom at higher volumes.
Does the gold sound any bigger and tighter than a blue and have less break up?

I noticed the Gold had more headroom, if that makes any sense. I have tried a 2-12 with blues, that was pretty good too. 1-12 blue, I have never tried.

Okay, it is not a Maz Jr, but read this bit from Tone Quest Report and you will know part of why I am going to buy a Celestion Gold. Listen to bentop's clips for the rest of the reasons. To quote the last paragraph here, it sounds like they are double-dog-daring us to try them.

Anyone know where I can get a Celestion gold in 16 ohms? Can't find em anywhere online.

Haven't been on their site lately but Avatar cabs I believe sells them outright if desired at a great price. Don't know the circumstance on the "Bay" but I do know Avatar is reputable and comes highly recommended from many on the forum

It might be OK in the 18 but with a louder amp my Gold had a lot of cone cry.

How does the Gold compare to the Blue? I don't play at high volumes and was wondering if a Blue would do better at lower db.

Well guys, I bit the bullet and ordered a C Gold from Avatar yesterday at the outrageous cost of $275.00 shipped. I'll pop it in the MAZ next week and post my opinion if anybody is interested.

Okay. I put the gold in my MAZ this morning and spent about 20 minutes playing before going to work. My initial impressions are good. It's been a while since I've heard a blue, but I'll try and use a blue as a reference point. It has that harmonically rich, complex sound that the blues are famous for. Highs don't seem as extended/chimey as the blue, but close. Upper mids very open and like the blue. Lower mids slightly thicker/warmer than the blue. Low end is deeper & tighter, with more control than the blue. The overall sound is thicker, bigger and fuller than a blue, but just a tad congested in comparison. The MAZ had to be really cranked to get that Alnico softness/compression. The blue does this at lower volumes. The blue also breaks up more at lower volumes. To my ears, the blue's bottom end sounds loose and flatulent when pushed. The gold's bottom end really stays tight & punchy. The blue can sound somewhat anemic in a 1x12 combo, but the gold sounds bigger, fuller and more in control. Even though the blue is a little more open sounding with a bit more chime, I prefer the gold and seems to be exactly what I've been looking for. Celestion hit a home run with this speaker! I can't wait until it breaks in. So, that's my take, guys. That and $3.50 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks!

Billy...my ears cry long before the GOLD ever thinks about it....no cone cry so far but I don't like ear bleeds so I may not be the right guy to ask.

Your very welcome and glad I could help. BTW...I haven't maxed out the MAZ yet with the gold installed, or tried any high output pedals, but so far no cone cry. However, I cried uncontrollably when I parted with $275.00.

Sounds like it may not have even broken in yet also.

I done ordered up a Gold to use with my Z28 head. Is anybody else doing this? I've tried it thru a Blue, sounds great (but a bit like roulette) and thru a red fang, equally great (but slightly less rich). In fact the red fang is my usual speaker if I need a little extra over the greenback. It should be excellent.

I am thinking a Greenback with a Z28. But I own neither so far.

I'm out on the road working and only have my 1X12 with me, so I wanted to get back close to that sound I remember.

Did two shows in Savannah, GA this past weekend using my MAZ Jr. and the C-gold. The speaker/amp worked well and sounded great. A guitar player in the audience approached me and mentioned how good my tone was and how nice and tight the low end was, especially from such a small amp. He sat in and I was able to go out into the audience and listen. His Strat and my MAZ/gold combination sounded superb. What a frigging awesome amp and speaker. ;D
