Anyone have a recommendation was to what would compliment my 2x12 cab with a weber alnico blue dog? I love the chime I am getting with the blue. I definitely want another alnico speaker. I was seriously considering the Tone Tubby... I'm just not sure.
I am also considering another Blue Dog, a Silver Bell, and a Celestion Blue. I play mainly pop/rock, and I am very influenced by U2.
Thanks for the help.

Just keep in mind that the total watts of your cab will be twice the lowest wattage speaker, so if you add a Celestion Alnico Blue, you have a 30 watt cab. If that's enough, that's a great speaker for those kinds of tones. If that's not enough, try the Gold - sounds almost identical but a bit stronger in the bottom.

i am using the cab with the maz jr.. so the wattage is fine. Will the celestion blue be versatile enough? i was hoping for something that could fill up the low end.

Well that's kind of subjective I suppose. I think it has great low end, but I've heard of guys pulling them to try to get firmer bottom. I think the bottom end is musical, but it sure isn't any competition for your bass player. You'd probably be better off trying them because we all hear something different.

will there be a large volume difference between the celestion blue and the alnico blue dog 30 watt? what about the weber and the gold?

Well the Celestions are both rated at 100db sensitivity, and I think the Weber is about there too, although Ted Weber stated that he does his different than Celestion so it's apples and oranges. I'm betting they are pretty close.

If you're generally happy with the tone of the AlNiCo Blue Dog, and would like something compatible with more (or tighter) bottom end, I would go for a Weber ceramic Blue Dog. I've mixed AlNiCo and ceramic Blue Dogs before, with great results. The ceramic magnet provides a bigger and tighter bottom end, but with generally the same tone at most volumes. To tighten it up even a notch more, you can order the BD with an upsized 50 ounce ceramic magnet.

Ah, just noticed that you said you definitely wanted to stay in the AlNiCo realm, so I guess my ceramic recommendation is a little off the mark.
Hmmmmm.... well, an AlNiCo Silver Bell has more bottom than the Blue Dog. Also, you could get one of Ted's AlNiCo's with a ceramic "booster" magnet to tighten things up. I think his AlNiCo version of the 1230 speaker is built that way. Might want to send Ted an e-mail about that one...
