So I've been going with one V30 and one Eminence Tonker (both 16ohms) in the Z-Best and I like the sound for sure. (I was forced into swapping out the stock Anniversary speaker becasue it made a weird jingling noise at higher volume).
Last night I got another Eminence Tonker and an Eminence Swamp Thang, both 8ohm. So I swapped those in as an expiriment. This was a failed experiment. These speakers together in this cab running my SRZ-65 were way too boomy/mushy. The bass was too much. The high end definition went missing. Just not good. Acceptable only for clean playing - with any amount of distortion, just awful.
It appears that the V30 is a great foil for the Tonker, each one filling in what the other lacks.
I'm going to try the Swamp Thang by itself when I get my unloaded JDesigns 112 with a semi-open back. Might be a better application for this one.
Cheers, Blair

Cheers, Blair As an update, I received the JDesigns 112 cab (a very nice cab) and loaded the Swamp Thang. Much, much better in this application. The bass is not nearly as boomy in this semi-open 112. Cleans are really great. High gain sounds are pretty darn good also. Cheers, Blair

I have just got an unloaded Z-best and was going to fit the usual V30/G12H combination. Can this be bettered for the sound I am looking for - strong clean low end and chimy top end?

I have just got an unloaded Z-best and was going to fit the usual V30/G12H combination. Can this be bettered for the sound I am looking for - strong clean low end and chimy top end? I think it is a great combo sound-wise. I liked it very much! However, the G12H is only rated for 30 watts. This means that even though the V30 is 60 watts, the cab is rated for 2x the lower-powered speaker. So the 212 with this combo is a 60w cab. I'm running the SRZ-65 and the 6545, which can put out considerably more. I think the G12H in mine couldn't keep up. Or it was just a bad individual speaker. Either way, I replaced it with a much higher-powered speaker - Eminence Tonker (150w). Cheers, Blair

For a great low end with clear highs I use 2 Texas Heats

Correct me if I'm wrong but... I was under the impression that the Z-best cabinett was a "Thiele-ported" cab. If so you just cant switch/change speakers in this cab any ol' way. This cab was ported to put the controlled low resonance frequence down to 30Hz if I remeber correctly. I.E out of the fundemental freq-range of the guitar. Change the speakers amd you change the Thiele-parameters - then you wont know where the low resonance frequency ends up. At least not with out some math work. Quote taken from Dr-Z website.
